Randy Butner To Become Bowman Gray All-Time Modified Starts Leader
Randy Butner will enter the Bowman Gray Stadium record books as the all-time starts leader in the Modified division.

Bowman Gray Stadium will have a new "Iron Man" this Saturday night. Randy Butner will officially hold the all-time starts record for the NASCAR Brad’s Golf Cars Modified division at 756 when he takes the green flag for Saturday night’s first Twin 25-lap race.
On June 21, Butner tied Junior Miller's Stadium Modified starts record at 755. He drove his Carolina Triad Choice Realty with Amanda Tucker, Greg Butcher Trucking No. 5 Troyer chassis to a 14th-place finish in the Market USA Modified 100 at the Winston-Salem, NC oval.
The veteran chauffeur says he appreciates all the great memories he's made at his home track, including 22 career Modified victories.
"Been a long ride with some good and bad times," says Butner, "but I wouldn't trade these last 38 years for anything."
Ironically, Butner's 22 career wins place him in a tie for 22nd on the all-time Mod win list with Johnny Bryant, the late Virginia Mod ace, and Billy Myers. Billy and his brother Bobby were the patriarchs of the famed Myers Modified legacy that stands strong today at the Stadium with Burt Myers, Jason Myers and fourth generation Slate Myers all competing on Saturday nights.
Randy Butner’s first win at the Stadium came on June 8, 1991 and his most recent on April 27, 2024, a winning wingspan of 33 seasons. He says that the fans, the excitement for racing, and camaraderie with his fellow competitors are what keep him coming back to the historic Stadium.
"You gotta love it. It takes money, time, and labor, but you gotta love it to be here for 38 years."
Butner will also be making his 763rd overall start at the famed quarter-mile. He passed Robert Jeffreys, the late father of Stadium Modified regular Lee Jeffreys, for second on the all-time starts list. Now, Butner only trails the great Alfred Hill on the overall starts stat sheet compiled by FloRacing Stadium broadcast contributor and historian Justin Mincey. Alfred Hill’s record 963 starts are spread between Modified, Sportsman and Hobby divisions races. Hill’s daughter, Susan Harwell, currently competes in the Mod ranks at Bowman Gray. The bloodlines run throughout the Stadium’s pit area, as Randy’s son Brandon Butner competes in the second Muddy Creek Motorsports ride, a #35, in the Modified division.
Randy Butner is also well known for his academic background. He is a professor in the Engineering department at Forsyth Technical Community College, where he also serves as coordinator for the race car technology program.
He says his students think it's cool to have a teacher who also drives race cars. "A lot of my students are actually in the racing industry right now," Butner adds.
Butner says he's still trying to adjust to how much the track has changed since it hosted The NASCAR Cup Series Clash in February, but he's confident he can win a race before the season's over.
"We've definitely been trying, and, God-willing, we'll keep trying as long as we're healthy and happy being in the race car."
The Red Oak Brewery 100 for the Sportsman division headlines the racing card, along with Twin-25’s for the Modifieds and action in both the Street Stock and Stadium Stock division. The event will also include the fan-favorite Fire in the Sky Parachute Team that will land in the infield of the Stadium football field as a tribute to the up-coming Independence Day weekend. Gates open at 6pm for this weekend’s races at Bowman Gray Stadium with the first race slated for an 8pm green-flag. Tickets are only $12 with child’s tickets (6-11 years old) only costing $2, and children under 5-years of age are free. Tickets can be purchased at the Stadium gates or in-advance using the TicketHoss app.
All NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series races from historic Bowman Gray Stadium are broadcast live on Saturday nights at 7:45 p.m. ET on FloRacing.
