The ultimate Crown Jewel has arrived, as Sprint Car racing's rendition of the $1,002,023-to-win Eldora Million goes down Thursday at Eldora Speedway.

Wednesday's preliminary night saw the sport's gold standard, four-time reigning World of Outlaws champion, Brad Sweet, and one of the hottest drivers in the country, Rico Abreu, take semifeature victories. It was Carson Macedo and Logan Schuchart, however, emerging as the top point-earners from Eldora Million prelim night. Both Macedo and Schuchart have never won a Crown Jewel event at the famed Big E half-mile. 

David Gravel, Sweet, Kyle Larson and Aaron Reutzel join Macedo and Schuchart as pole-starters for Thursday's 10-lap heat races, which feature 13 to 14 drivers apiece slugging it out for three transfer spots. Those who don't directly qualify to the 50-lap grand finale are thereby relegated to consolation events.

Eldora Million Heat Recaps

— Pandemonium is the best word to describe the opening heat, which spanned 32 minutes, had multiple wrecks and saw second-running Brent Marks run out of fuel in the closing laps.

Carson Macedo ultimately survived the 10-lap grind over former All Star Circuit of Champions traveler Justin Peck and ninth-starting Justin Whittall, who competes weekly at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway. Sheldon Haudenschild, Brady Bacon and Australian Sprint Car champion Jamie Veal were among those involved in a wreckage. Haudenschild (12th) and Veal (14th) didn't finish, while Bacon and Marks finished ninth and 10th. 

— Logan Schuchart cruised to victory in the second heat over Rico Abreu and Tyler Courtney, but it wasn't as easy as it looked. The Hanover, Pa., driver had a power steering pump go bad and that created a myriad of issues.

"I could barely see ... it was a handful the last couple of laps," Schuchart said. "I couldn't see , had oil all over my gloves."

2021 Kings Royal champion Tyler Courtney and Buddy Kofoid were among those relegated to the B-main in the second heat.

— David Gravel fended off Jacob Allen's relentless push to grab the victory in the third heat, while James McFadden held onto the third and final transfer spot. 

Danny Dietrich was one spot out of qualifying for the main event when he caught a rut in turn one and flipped out of the running. Dietrich couldn't continue and finished 14th.

— Brad Sweet led flag to flag for his second straight preliminary victory ahead of the Eldora Million in the fourth heat of the night over Giovanni Scelzi and Ohio native Cole Duncan.

Kerry Madsen was running inside a transfer spot when on the opening lap he lost the handle of the Vermeer Motorsports No. 55 and flipped.

— Kyle Larson put the Paul Silva-prepared No. 57 Sprint Car into the top-six redraw with his victory in the fifth heat ahead of Brian Brown and Spencer Bayston.

Shane Stewart and Lance Dewease, subbing in Anthony Macri's No. 39M, were among those relegated to consolation events.

— Aaron Reutzel powered around Donny Schatz on a restart with two laps to go for the sixth and final heat victory. Cory Eliason was the third and final transfer. Reutzel leveraged the bottom groove on the restart to dispatch Schatz, where he sized up a slider that Schatz couldn't counter.

“It’s so top dominating right now .. you want to get the jump and drive across their line and get them in dirty air," Reutzel said. "I was shocked he chose the (top). … I new I was going to have a lot sped driving acrid and he wasn’t. ... That was a little bit of luck there. I think to win this Million you’ll need a little bit of luck. It’s a good start there."

Garet Williamson crossed the line in fourth but was docked two positions for jumping the start. Former WoO champion Daryn Pittman was credited with fourth.
