What to know about the North Wilkesboro Speedway for 2023 ASA Stars National Tour and CARS Tour races
NASCAR’s 75th anniversary season picks up excitement as the North Wilkesboro Speedway re-opens for the 2023 ASA STARS National Series and CARS Tour.
The historic location prepares to host a busy week of races for the first time in more than 25 years. The event will start a new chapter for North Carolina’s beloved track as some of NASCAR's favorite drivers are participating in this week's schedule, including Chase Elliot, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
FloRacing and the FloSports app will be live-streaming all the CARS Tour events this season, including this week, as well as select ASA STARS events.
When Did North Wilkesboro Speedway Close?
The track opened in 1949 and held it's last NASCAR race in 1996, before closing that same year. North Wilkesboro re-opened in 2010 for a series of races but has remained inactive since.
The speedway was constructed as a 0.625-mile oval on a dirt track. It was originally owned by NASCAR, but the asset was dropped when the organization focused on developing other circuits.
Who Owns North Wilkesboro Speedway?
The track was built by Enoch Staley for NASCAR, and during this time it hosted 93 premier series races.
However, due to it's limited size and amenities, it's popularity declined in the mid-90s. Speedway Motorsports acquired the track in 2007.
North Wilkesboro Speedway's Last NASCAR Race
Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon won the 1996 NASCAR race in a face-off against Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Jeff Gordon drove for Hendrick Motorsports during that victory, which draws parallels as the team brings Chase Elliott to the track nearly 30 years later.
The memory of this legendary battle is also noted in Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s participation in this week's events.
