The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to “The Magic Mile” of New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire this weekend for its annual 100-lap showdown on its biggest stage.
Returning to The Tour for the first time since May is four-time NWMT champion Justin Bonsignore and his Ken Massa Motorsports No. 51 car. Bonsignore has one win this season, which came in the season opener at New Smyrna Speedway. But Bonsignore and his team have scaled back their operations since the middle of May. Bonsignore has three victories at NHMS and finished second last year in one of the most memorable finishes ever at the one-mile oval.
Bonsignore lost by feet last year to Tyler Rypkema, who scored his first and so far only NWMT win in the process. Rypkema made a bold move into turn three on the final lap to take the lead before making contact with Bonsignore, slamming into the outside wall, and sliding across the finish line with three wheels left on his famous “Ole Blue” No. 3 for Boehler Racing Enterprises.
Matt Hirschman is the most recent NWMT winner. That win came a couple of weeks ago at Thompson Speedway, which was the first for Hirschman at the historic Connecticut facility. Hirschman is still also looking for his first NWMT win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. In 13 previous starts, Hirschman has three top five finishes and six top 10 finishes. But in order to score the win, Hirschman will need to lead a lap. Which, amazingly, Hirschman has never done at NHMS throughout his legendary career.
Also returning to NWMT competition this weekend is the 2013 champion, NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece. Preece made a name for himself at NHMS, even though it took a long time (until 2021) for the Modified win to happen for him here. Preece made his NASCAR O’Reilly Series debut in Loudon, and showed the sport he could race up front when he finished second to Kyle Busch here in 2017.
