The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series nears the halfway point of the season this weekend, starting Friday at Ohio's Atomic Speedway, the 25th race event of the tour's 51-race schedule that goes for 50 laps and $25,000-to-win.

Nearly 30 drivers and teams are on hand for the Independence 50 on Fourth of July, with the 15 campaigners on the Lucas Oil tour the bulk of Friday's roster. West Virginia natives Tyler Carpenter, Freddie Carpenter and Matt Cosner headline the list of regional drivers.

Points leader Ricky Thornton Jr. held off Josh Rice to win March’s $15,000 Buckeye Spring 50 in the first series visit. Thornton leads all drivers with nine wins thus far, though he hasn’t visited victory lane since May 17 at Eagle (Neb.) Raceway.

Rice won May’s $5,000 Iron-Man Series stop at Atomic after earning a $3,000 unsanctioned victory there last spring. Jonathan Davenport enters fresh off his first career Firecracker 100 victory at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., worth $50,000.
