Jonathan Davenport is no longer on the metaphorical fence when it comes to contemplating a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title run this season.

The Blairsville, Ga., superstar announced late Thursday via Facebook that he’s indeed committed to following the FloRacing-streamed tour for a pursuit of a would-be record-tying fourth series title.

Davenport, who’s won series titles in 2015, 2018 and most recently in 2019, is one series championship behind Earl Pearson Jr. (four straight titles from 2005-08) and Jimmy Owens (three straight titles in 2011-13 and 2020) for most all time.

The Double L Motorsports driver is currently third in the overall standings, 25 points behind reigning DirtonDirt.com Driver of the Year in Ricky Thornton Jr. who leads the series into March 22’s next stop at Atomic Speedway outside Chillicothe, Ohio.

Davenport’s expected to take these next three weekends off to prepare for the tour’s resumption on March 22 and March 23 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway. Through 12 races this year, he has a $12,000 victory at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla., and five additional podium runs.

The Georgian finished fourth in Lucas Oil Series points last season and had a chance to win another title at Eldora Speedway’s Dirt Track World Championship in Rossburg, Ohio, when he qualified for the tour’s Big River Steel Big Four.

A mud clot that punched a hole through his radiator while running fifth with 20 laps left in the DTWC ended Davenport’s 2023 title hopes.
