Hall of Fame driver Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and will soon undergo surgery.

Bloomquist’s health problem was made public Tuesday in a Facebook post by Missouri racer Reid Millard, who noted that Bloomquist had to bypass a scheduled autograph signing at Tuesday night’s Millard-promoted DIRTcar Summer Nationals event at Moberly (Mo.) Motorsports Park because he had medical appointments in his home state.

Sidelined all season since making one abbreviated start in January due to residual complications from the serious injuries he suffered in a March 2019 motorcycle accident, the 59-year-old star (pictured) said doctors discovered his cancerous prostate amid other examinations he had while preparing for a corrective operation on his back. He noted that the cancer was found early and he is expected to make a full recovery with surgery and treatment.

“It’s basically the same deal as Dale McDowell had,” Bloomquist told DirtonDirt.com on Saturday at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., prior to his diagnosis becoming public, referring to his fellow veteran driver’s prostate cancer diagnosis and successful surgery in the fall of 2021.

While the cancer diagnosis will take precedence and delay Bloomquist’s plans for a back procedure that he hopes will alleviate pain and nerve problems in his leg and foot, he said he remains confident that he will be able to resume his driving career. He indicated that he will likely have to chalk up 2023 as a “cleanse” year as he looks toward the future with an eye on ending a winless streak dating back to September 2020.

Bloomquist did not provide further comment to DirtonDirt.com by late Tuesday night, but his good friend and traveling buddy, Ronnie Roberts, posted on Facebook that Bloomquist is scheduled for prostate surgery on July 5.
