On Thursday night (Sept. 21), there were two winners at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Cade Dillard won the A-Main for the second consecutive year, while Jason Hughes took the championship in back-to-back seasons.
Last year, Dillard crossed under the checkers with Hughes on his back bumper. This time around, Ryan Gustin finished second after winning his heat and starting fifth.
The battle for the Casey’s Cup came down to Hughes and Stormy Scott, who was the only driver who could mathematically challenge. Scott needed to win or finish high in the standings and wish some bad luck on his competitor. Hughes only needed to keep Scott in sight.
Finishing sixth, Scott lost his opportunity to make a challenge. Hughes followed Scott across the line in eighth. This was the fifth time in the past nine years that Hughes entered the weekend with the points lead and left as the champion.
