Matt Sheppard entered the Labor Day 100 at Weedsport (New York) Speedway with a five wins in the past six races and left with his sixth after holding Stewart Friesen at bay during a green-white-checkered finish on Monday.
Sheppard and Friesen led the field to green for the 100-lap affair -- and it would be Friesen who got the initial jump on the field to lead 46 laps. Several yellows kept him from getting away, however, and once Sheppard gained the lead, Friesen fell back to third for a while -- allowing Jimmy Phelps to get past.
By the time the final caution of the night waved, Friesen was back in second and ready to challenge. With one circuit remaining, Rob Bellinger tagged the turn four wall to set up the shootout.
Sheppard’s win was his second consecutive Labor Day win.
Friesen settled for second with Phelps in third.
Peter Britten and Erick Rudolph rounded out the top five.
Sheppard's win elevated him to second in the points, 48 behind Billy Decker who finished ninth at Weedsport.
