The Race(s)

The Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout is an indoor racing event held December 29 - January 1 at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahama. The event features six divisions of Micro Sprint racing: Winged Outlaws, Non-Wing Outlaws, Winged A-Class, Stock Non-Wing, Restricted A Class and Junior Sprints.

This year's version of the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout is the 37th running of the event called the "Mecca of Micros." The race serves as a prelude to the prestigious Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals, which will begin a week later on January 9.

The Track

The race is held on a quarter-mile clay oval built inside the SageNet Center. Clay that once covered the adjacent fairgrounds is used to create the racing surface.

Event officials began building the track on December 12, using a step-by-step process to prepare the track for both the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout and Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals.

The Format

With over 1,400 entries for this year's event, narrowing down the field to 24 feature starters in each of the six divisions is no easy task.

Step 1: The Pill Draw - When signing in for the event, drivers draw for their starting position in one of what could be as many as 30 heat races.

Step 2: Heat Races - Drivers will earn points based on their finishing position and how many positions they gain or lose during heat races. Following heat races, the top 112 in passing points are sent to qualifiers, while the rest of the field are sent to D-Mains or C-Mains to begin a potential run through the alphabet soup.

Step 3: Eight Qualifiers - Each qualifier will feature a top-four inversion prior to the green flag. This gives the top 32 point-getters from heat races a great chance to earn more points. During the qualifiers, drivers will once again be racing for points. Only the top 16 in combined points (heats + qualifier) will advance to the main event. 17th-112th in points will be split into B-Mains.

Step 4: The top two finishers in D-Mains will transfer to C-Mains. The two finishers in C-Mains will transfer to B-Mains. The top two finishers in the B-Mains will transfer to a last chance qualifier. The top eight from the last chance qualifier will transfer into each division's main event.

Step 5: We have a field of 24 cars that will race for a Golden Driller trophy.

Storylines

- NASCAR Cup Series star Christopher Bell will return to the Tulsa Shootout looking for his second career win (and possibly more). The three-time Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals winner will be competing in four divisions: Winged Outlaws, Non-Wing Outlaws, Winged A Class and Stock Non-Wings.

- Three Sprint Car champions from the 2021 season will be competing in this year's event: FloRacing All Star Circuit of Champions champion Tyler Courtney, USAC National Sprint Car Series champion Brady Bacon and Lucas Oil ASCS National champion Blake Hahn.

- Will a driver win more than one Golden Driller trophy? Jason McDougal was the last to do so, winning Non-Wing Outlaw, Stock Non-Wing and Winged A-Class main events in 2018.

- Five of the six defending Tulsa Shootout champions from last year – Kris Carroll (Non-Wing Outlaw), Lucas Mauldin (Jr. Sprint), Mitchel Moles (Outlaw), Jaxton Wiggs (Restricted), Mason Keefer (600cc Modified) – will return to the event.

- NASCAR Camping World Truck Series most popular driver Hailie Deegan has not submitted an official entry, but she is expected to make her Tulsa Shootout debut. Deegan has competed in a handful of Micro Sprint events at Millbridge Speedway.
