10 driver tidbits for 2021

  1. Dominating the Wild West Shootout over recent seasons, Brandon Sheppard's 2021 absence opens the door of opportunity for fellow competitors. In 18 Wild West Shootout events from 2018-'20, Sheppard posted four victories, 17 top-five finishes (including an active stretch of 14 straight) and 18 top-10 finishes. Sheppard's lone finish outside the top five was eighth on Jan. 12, 2018.
  2. Illinois drivers have won 10 of the last 13 Wild West Shootout features in Arizona's January action. While Sheppard will miss out in 2021, fellow Illinois drivers Bobby Pierce (six victories) and Brian Shirley (three victories in 2020) are set to return.
  3. Looking to extend his margin atop the all-time list, winningest driver Billy Moyer will compete in Wild West Shootout action for the first time since 2017. Moyer won and placed third in his final two miniseries starts that season.
  4. Jonathan Davenport plans to enter the Wild West Shootout for the first time since winning three 2016 events at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz., including the $11,000 finale. J.D. is also set to make his first appearance at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek.
  5. Terry Phillips is still searching for his first miniseries victory at Arizona Speedway with plans to continue his quest in 2021. The 10-time Arizona winner last won in 2013 action at Tucson (Ariz.) International Raceway and has previous January victories at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, along with Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.
  6. Donny Schatz is set to pilot his No. 15 Late Model in the Wild West Shootout ahead of Jan. 22-24's Wild Wing Shootout sprint car action in Queen Creek.
  7. Rodney Sanders will pull double duty at the 2021 Wild West Shootout after piloting only his modified in Arizona action the past two seasons. While Sanders has a pair of modified victories at Arizona Speedway, he guns for his first Super Late Model triumph at the track. He previously claimed a Late Model checkered flag on Jan. 14, 2015, at USA Raceway in Tucson.
  8. Past miniseries winner and champion Mike Marlar will return to the Wild West Shootout for the first time since 2018.
  9. Other past Wild West Shootout winners expected in 2021 include Jimmy Mars, Don Shaw and Chris Simpson.
  10. Among new drivers expected in Arizona Speedway action include Chad Simpson, Jason Feger, Gordy Gundaker, Rusty Schlenk, Jared Landers and Jake Timm. Tentatively, 23 drivers will make their first appearance.
