A Look Back: The 2003 USAC National Sprint Car Season

For all practical purposes, J.J. Yeley took command of USAC’s national sprint car series with his first win of the season at Terre Haute in May. In the stretch of the next nine races, he won five features and finished second three times in his Tony Stewart Racing Mopar machines. His worst finish was fifth.

As if that wasn’t enough of a whipping, after Yeley’s only mechanical failure of the season in the next race at Pikes Peak, he began another streak. From early July, through the end of the season - 16 point-paying events - he compiled seven more wins with only one finish outside of the top-three. Yeley’s accomplishments included a second Indiana Sprint Week title, and a brilliant Buckeye Nationals where he won twice and finished second twice. Credited with 13 victories, he came up one shy of Tom Bigelow’s season mark. But Yeley had notched one additional win in a USAC/SCRA non-point race at Terre Haute. He claimed his second USAC Sprint Car title by more than 350 points, the biggest margin in 27 years.

Like Yeley, Jay Drake entered 2003 with a new racing team. Driving for Keith Kunz and employing Mopar-power and Kunz’s own chassis on dirt, he scored victories at Lawrenceburg, Putnamville and on the asphalt at Toledo in an Eagle. At Pikes Peak, Drake set (at the time) an all-time sprint car qualifying record of 144.950 mph.

Wheeling Hoffman’s Kroger/Tide/Pringles cars, Tracy Hines led the points in early May. The defending series champion, Hines notched 15 top-five finishes to earn third in the final standings. His victories came at Pikes Peak, during the Buckeye Nationals at Fremont, Ohio and the Indiana Sprint Week finale at Terre Haute.

Returning after a serious eye injury in 2002, Bud Kaeding completed his first full season in USAC’s sprint cars. He claimed a big win at Kokomo during Indiana Sprint Week in an event where Boston Reid suffered a serious concussion in a violent flip. Reid was also in his initial season on pavement and dirt with the Bill Davis/Scott Benic team. He earned an early win at Eldora during Border Wars and finished the season fifth in points despite missing three races after the Kokomo injury. Similarly, Cory Kruseman completed his first full season in USAC competition, competing for the Tony Stewart Racing stable. Sixth in the points, the Kruser’s best runs were runner-up finishes at Terre Haute and Kokomo.

Two-time USAC Sprint Car champion Brian Tyler claimed a May victory at Anderson. When Eric Gordon won the Little 500, he joined Bob Frey as the second five-time winner of the prestigious event. Jon Stanbrough hustled Paul Hazen’s Stealth into victory lane at Eldora and Lawrenceburg, increasing his career win total to seven. Dave Steele earned the win at Nazareth.

Bobby East’s first USAC Sprint Car victory came at Mansfield, Ohio. Bookending the season were first-time winners Aaron Pierce at the Anderson opener and Troy Cline in the finale at The Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Michael Lewis earned victories in his first sprint car starts at both Winchester and Salem. With a third feature win at Cedar Rapids, Lewis was named co-Rookie of the Year in the sprint car division. Sharing Rookie honors was Mat Neely, who finished 16^th in the final standings. At 14^th in points, Marc Jessup was named the series’ most improved driver.

Jac Haudenschild’s victory in the Mopar Million at Eldora topped USAC’s special non-points sprint car events in 2003. In August, three races were completed in conjunction with SCRA. They were won by Yeley (Terre Haute), Hines (Farmer City) and Troy Rutherford (Granite City).
