After two attempts to run the Jack Johnson Tribute, ‘The Jack’ will finally see the green lights this Saturday night at Fonda Speedway with the stars and cars of the Super DIRTcar Series.

Originally scheduled as ‘Thunder Along the Mohawk,’ this Saturday, September 22nd, will feature the ‘Jack 100,’ which will include the final NAPA Super DIRT Week qualifier for the 200-lap extravaganza at Oswego Speedway on Sunday, October 7th.

This Saturday’s event will be the final series race on tap before drivers and teams take a week off to tune their machines in preparation for 47thrunning of NAPA Super DIRT Week.

Leading the charts with the most series wins this season is the hot shoe out of Sprakers, N.Y., Stewart Friesen.

Friesen is what some may call the black horse. He hasn’t been running the series fulltime this season due to commitments with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but when he does come out to play, he comes out and sweeps the field in high fashion.

Fortunately, for the competition, Friesen will not be in attendance this Saturday to defend his home turf.

Taking Friesen out of the game leaves the door open for endless possibilities.

One driver in particular who will be looking to defend his home turf against the series regulars will be last year’s Super DIRTcar Series victor and 2018 Fonda Speedway champion, Bobby Varin.

Last year saw Varin take the checkers for the Super DIRTcar Series St. Lawrence Radiology 100 back in September over his son Danny Varin, Pat Ward, Billy Decker and Matt Sheppard. Maybe we’ll see both Varin’s at the top of the charts once again come lap 100.

Last years tribute race saw ‘Magic’ Mike Mahaney do a roof dance in front of a crowded house. Mahaney, who has competed in select races this season with his Buzz Chew Chevrolet No.88 Big Block Modified, will be in attendance on Saturday looking to make it a repeat.

2016 saw the current points leader and Super DIRTcar Series reigning champ, Matt Sheppard, come out on top of a stout field. Sheppard hasn’t had as strong of a season as years past but has been consistent in his no.9s machine. Sheppard just recently broke his dry spell this past Friday with a victory at Brewerton Speedway, his first win with the series since July.

This Saturday’s race will be in honor of a great man, Jack Johnson, who was an unstoppable force at Fonda Speedway and on the Super DIRTcar Series circuit for a quarter century, won four Super DIRTcar Series championships between 1978 and 1988 and holds 57 Super DIRTcar Series victories.

Johnson currently sits atop the modified all time win list with 149 big block modified victories at ‘The Track of Champions,’ he is also the driver with the most track championships at Fonda with 11 titles to his name. This event is only fitting to tribute the legendary driver from Duanesburg, NY.

With 19 series races in the books so far this season, the series has seen a total of nine different victors mark their names in the history books. Who will invade the fast-half-mile and stand atop the podium this Saturday night under the lights and take ‘The Jack’ tribute?
