The Super DIRTcar Series has hit the busy portion of the 2018 schedule and will run its third race in six days when it rolls into Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY, for the Ultimate Outlaw 100 on Tuesday, July 10. The fast 1/3-mile track has seen plenty of rejuvenation since Big-Block Modified driver and businessman Tyler Siri purchased the track prior to the 2016 season.

The track has undergone several renovations and has gained plenty of attention under Siri’s guidance. It also saw the return of the Super DIRTcar Series last season for the first time since 1990, when “The Doctor” Danny Johnson went to Victory Lane. The series was also scheduled to visit in 2012, but the event was rained out.

While Billy Decker went to Victory Lane at the fast 4/10-mile track with the series last season, a pair of names have dominated the track located in the scenic Finger Lakes region of New York since Siri’s take over. In nine races this season, only two drivers have won a weekly event at the track: Matt Sheppard and Alan Johnson.

Over the last two seasons, Sheppard has been the dominant force at Outlaw. The current Super DIRTcar Series points leader is also the reigning track champion and currently occupies second in the track’s weekly standings. During Friday weekly events, Sheppard pilots the Vic Coffey-owned No. 92 car but will bring his own No. 9s for Tuesday’s Ultimate Outlaw showdown.

Sheppard has earned 14 wins at Outlaw over the past two seasons as a full-time weekly competitor at the Dundee track. This year alone, he has six wins in nine weekly starts. Add to the list the two series wins to his credit in 2018, and it’s an impressive resume Sheppard boasts entering the showdown.

When Sheppard hasn’t been in Victory Lane, Johnson has occupied the spot. Affectionately known as “AJ Slideways,” Johnson has three wins at Outlaw this season and currently leads the track championship point standings. When he’s not winning, he’s finishing on the podium and remains a constant threat to win.

The only other Modified winner this season was Stewart Friesen when the Short Track Super Series stormed in for a mid-week event on June 20. Last season, “The Hurricane” Steve Paine grabbed three wins but hasn’t been able to knock either Sheppard or Johnson off the top pedestal.

While Sheppard and Johnson are the early favorites to claim the win on Tuesday night, there are a number of talented drivers that could pull off the upset. Last year it was Decker.

This season, there are a number of series regulars looking to break through with their first win of the season, Decker included. Jimmy Phelps took himself off the list with a win Sunday night at Utica-Rome Speedway, but add to the list his up-and-coming Heinke-Baldwin Racing teammate Max McLaughlin, veteran pilot Tim Fuller, series mainstay Brett Hearn, and Aussie Peter Britten as drivers in the top 10 in points who are among the legitimate threats to take down the favorites.

The track’s wide corners and racy surface provide an excellent playground for the Super DIRTcar Series drivers to determine the Ultimate Outlaw on Tuesday night.
