By The Numbers: Sheppard Reclaims Points Lead After 2nd SDS Win
“Super” Matt Sheppard led the way for the 31 Modifieds that attempted to qualify for the O’Canada 100 and chase down the $6,000 payday on Sunday.
It was a scorcher Sunday evening at Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ontario, with the Super DIRTcar Series’ first invasion over the border. En route to his second win of the season, “Super” Matt Sheppard led the way for the 31 Modifieds that attempted to qualify for the O’Canada 100 and chase down the $6,000 payday in front of a packed house.
With the victory, Sheppard vaults back into first place in the SDS season standings with 367 points—just one race after sliding from the top spot to third.
Sheppard kicked off the night by collecting his 36th career Billy Whittaker Cars and Trux Fast-Time Award. Erick Rudolph took the checkers in the first Super DIRTcar Series heat, followed by Michael Parent in heat two, Brett Hearn in heat three, and Sheppard in heat four.
With just 31 cars on hand, the Modifieds didn’t run a consi so all cars were eligible to start the feature event.
Cornwall Motor Speedway regular Chris Raabe grabbed the pole position inside of Steve Bernard.
Raabe brought the 31-car field to the green flag but was passed on the outside by Bernard, who broke into an early lead.
Sheppard, who started in seventh, broke into the top three by lap 15 as Bernard began to work his way through lapped traffic.
Sheppard was able to close in on Bernard and give a good battle for the top spot as they raced side-by-side until the yellow was thrown, gathering the field back up.
It was smooth sailing after lap 45 for Super Matt as he pulled away from Bernard and Raabe to win his second Super DIRTcar Series race of the season and net the hot $6,000 victory at the 1/4-mile bullring.
Rounding out the top five were Raabe, Kyle Dingwall, Bernard, and McLaughlin.
The next Super DIRTcar Series race is slated for this Thursday, July 15, at Land of Legends Raceway in Canandaigua, NY, and is streaming LIVE on FloRacing.
