A night after being locked in a two-car battle for the win, Trent Young and Mike Harrison provided an encore performance for American Modified Series fans on Sunday at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, IL.

Only this time, it was the Young who left with the victory, the lion’s share of series points, and $3,000 at the end of 35 laps.

Young and Harrison both won their heat races to start on row 1 as the A-Main got underway at the quarter-mile semi-banked dirt oval. Harrison led all but one lap on Saturday at Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway, with Young finishing second. But on Sunday, the Crofton, KY, native Young answered by riding the high line from flag-to-flag and smoothly navigating his way through lapped traffic to maintain his overall lead in the AMS season points standings.

“It was a great time. I love coming to this place,” Young said. “We’ve been quick every time. It’s owed me one and I finally got it back. It doesn’t get any better than outrunning Mike Harrison here. I got the most respect for him as anybody. He’s the toughest guy there is to beat. That’s what you set your goal to be is to try to beat the best. Tonight, we were able to do it and hopefully we can continue doing it.”

The victory is Young’s second AMS triumph of 2018 after winning the season opener at Windy Hollow in Owensboro, KY, on April 20. Harrison also owns a pair of wins, including an earlier victory at Fayette County on May 4 in which Young finished as runner-up. Prior to Sunday’s race, the three-time reigning DIRTcar UMP Modified national champion Harrison had won three of the four last AMS races in Brownstown.

After his long-awaited breakthrough at the track, Young had plenty of others to thank for helping him finally reach victory lane.

“I can’t say enough about this Pierce Platinum hot rod—this thing’s just getting better and better,” Young said. “All my crew, everybody that’s here helping me, it’s just taken a lot of effort to get us where we’re at.”

Meanwhile, Tyler Nicely, a winner last month at Kentucky’s Cedar Ridge Speedway, finished in third place Sunday for his second podium result of the season. He was trailed by Brian Shaw and Josh Harris to round out the top five, respectively.

This weekend’s lineup of races was a scheduled triple-header for the AMS; however, the series was forced to postpone its first trip of the season to Farmer City Raceway on Friday due to rain. The AMS and the raceway are working on a possible rescheduled date for the race.

With Central Illinois in their rear-view, Young and the rest of the AMS regulars now turn their attention this week to “America’s Baddest Bullring”—aka Tyler County Speedway— in Middlebourne, WV, for three nights of racing at the fourth annual Dirt Modified Mega 100, beginning Thursday with open practice and Summit Racing Equipment Modified “Sanction Shootout.”

On Friday, the track will host twin $1,500-to-win Modified features at 25 laps each plus a $3,000-to-win feature for ULMS Late Models. But the main attraction will have to wait until Saturday night—a record-breaking $15,000 payday for the winner of the 50-lap Modified feature.
