Fantasy FIA World Rallycross Picks For Belgium

The 2018 FIA World Rallycross Championship gets back into action this weekend, and that means the return of our Fantasy World RX picks.

Along with selecting our favorite driver from each pool below, we also answer five bonus questions about the major storylines heading into the World RX of Belgium at Jules Tacheny Circuit in Mettet, streaming LIVE on FloRacing this Sunday.

Pool A: Bakkerud, Kristoffersson, Solberg, Loeb

The pick: Johan Kristoffersson

Last year’s race winner is coming off back-to-back victories to open the 2018 season. While Kristoffersson feels he’s facing tougher competition than last year, it’s hard to pick the field against a driver who’s won nine of the past 11 stops on the World RX tour.

Pool B: Chicherit, Baumanis, Ekstrom, Gronholm, T. Hansen

The pick: Guerlain Chicherit

The GC Kompetition driver earned a career-best fifth-place finish at Montalegre in Portugal two weeks ago and is coming off a victory of 2018 in the French Rallycross Championship at Abbeville Baie de Somme.

Timmy Hansen is the returning runner-up at the Jules Tacheny Circuit, but we like Chicherit to continue his hot streak and notch another high overall finish.

Pool C: Duval, K. Hansen, Eriksson, Timerzyanov

The pick: Kevin Hansen

Hansen finished 2017 with a pair of finals appearances, but that success hasn’t carried over into this season—yet. After placing 13th and eighth through two rounds, the 19-year-old Peugeot driver looks to get back on track at the site of one of his four Euro RX Supercar victories in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Belgian crowd will be cheering for local favorite Francois Duval, who’s driving an ex-EKS Audi S1 prepared by Comtoyou Racing. Duval, the lone guest driver in this year’s race, was a finalist in Mettet in 2016.

Pool D: Demoustier, Grosset-Janin, Larsson

The pick: Jerome Grosset-Janin

Robin Larsson and his Olsbergs team are still looking for consistency from their new Mk8 Ford Fiesta Supercars. That’s been the opposite case for Grosset-Janin’s GCK team, which has experienced breakthrough success with its Prodrive-engineered Renault Megane RS RX.

Bonus Question 1: How many Belgium drivers will make the semifinals?

The pick: Zero

The locals will have two Belgians in the field: Francois Duval and Gregoire DeMoustier. Duval certainly has a proven record of success in circuit racing; however, this is his first appearance in the series since last September.

Demoustier hasn’t finished higher than 13th in a qualifying heat through two rounds this season.

Bonus Question 2: Will both Olsbergs MSE drivers make the semifinals?

The pick: No

Kevin Eriksson and Robin Larsson have flip-flopped semifinals appearances for Olsbergs MSE in the first two rounds. Eriksson most recently made the semis in Portugal, while Larsson opened the season with a semifinal berth in Spain.

Look for that trend to continue until their team resolves its previously mentioned mechanical issues.

Bonus Question 3: Which driver will be fastest in Q2: Bakkerud, Kristoffersson, Ekstrom, Solberg, Loeb, or T. Hansen?

The pick: Timmy Hansen

The Team Peugeot Total driver crashed out of his first qualifier at Barcelona-Catalunya, but since then, he hasn’t finished lower than sixth in any heat. Two weeks ago, Hansen posted the top Q2 time of 2:39.635—which was also the fastest overall for the day—at Montalegre.

He’s also reached the podium in Mettet in 2014 and 2017.

Bonus Question 4: How many NON-Scandinavian drivers will be in the final?

The pick: 2

So far this season only two French drivers—Sebastien Loeb and Guerlain Chicherit—have broken up the Scandinavians’ stranglehold on the top six finalists spots.

Loeb is seemingly a lock to return to the finals this Sunday—he’s finished as runner-up in both rounds in 2018. That leaves the pressure on Chicherit to continue his impressive start to the season.

Bonus Question 5: Which driver will set the fastest race lap time in Q4: Duval, Chicherit, Baumanis, Grosset-Janin, Larsson, or Timerzyanov?

The pick: Robin Larsson

While he’s had his share of struggles this season, Larsson has hit his stride in the fourth round of qualifying at both Barcelona-Catalunya and Montalegre, with the seventh-fastest time in the season opener and the 11th-fastest mark two weeks ago.
