Justin Grant Takes The Fourth And Final A-Main In Chili Bowl Prelims
Justin Grant found the highline and dedicated himself to it Friday to take win the final preliminary night A-Main win.
Justin Grant won the fourth and final night of preliminary action for the Chili Bowl to lock into tonight’s A-Main feature at River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, OK.
Starting second, Grant climbed onto the cushion and passed pole sitter Chad Boat to lead the first four laps. From third, Damion Gardner assumed the lead early and maintained it for 14 laps, which left Grant with a decision to make. He remained dedicated to the cushion and benefited by a slow start by Gardner following a caution flag.
Grant swept past Gardner on the outside of turn two on a heavy cushion with eight laps remaining in the 25-lap feature.
“I'm always thinking about going high," Grant said. "I knew the bottom would be slowing down. It was getting pretty thin there so I figured I could just bail off to the top and make up some ground on them."
This was Grant’s second consecutive Friday night A-Main win.
Gardner continued to fall and ultimately ended the night one position out of the guaranteed transfers in fourth.
Spencer Bayston grabbed second one lap after Grant assumed the lead. Andrew Felker quickly followed and finished the race third after an accident on Monday put his entire program in jeopardy.
"I managed to make about three-quarters of a lap in practice and flipped it," Felker said. "We took it to a chassis shop, and they normally work on Micros, so as they were straightening it, it sprung out of the braces and actually flipped off the table so it's been quite a week."
NASCAR veteran Kasey Kahne challenged for a top-three position briefly before falling to fifth at the checkers, but he will be in a good position Saturday for the alphabet soup that completes the lineup.
