Kyle Larson's second-place finish at Kentucky Speedway has been encumbered due to a failed post-race inspection, according to an official release from NASCAR.

The 42 car broke section 12.10 saying "Ductwork or other devices are not allowed to pass from one area of the interior of the vehicle to another or to the outside of the vehicle." 

With this penalty, Larson's crew chief Chad Johnston has been fined $75,000 and suspended for the next three races. The penalty also includes the loss of 35 owner points and 35 driver points.

While the encumbered finish won't matter much since Larson did not win and already has two victories so far this season, the loss of drivers' points is a bit more problematic. After Kentucky, Larson was the points' leader with 710 points--an advantage of just one over Martin Truex Jr.

Both drivers have been extremely productive this year in regard to top-fives finishes the regular season point advantage could easily come down to less than 35.
