While the Monster Energy Supercross 450-class on Jan. 21 will primarily be remembered for Ken Roczen’s nasty fall and injuries, there were fireworks in the first heat between Jason Anderson and Vince Friese.

As he turned around a corner, Anderson lost control of his bike, and in the process, took out Friese, who was trying to pull around the outside of the turn.

As a result, Anderson was disqualified from the event, which was bad news for him in the standings. After notching two fourth-place finishes in first two Monster Energy Supercross races of the season, he fell from fourth to ninth in the standings. With Roczen suffering an injury in the main event, Anderson missed a chance to climb into the top three.

Friese finished 15th and 17th. Because Anderson was disqualified, he fell from fourth to ninth in the season standings after three races. Friese was able to continue competing, and finished 16th in the 450 main event. He now sits 18th in the season standings.

Anderson finished third last season behind Ryan Dungey and Roczen in the Monster Energy standings, while Friese finished 16th.
