Halloween weekend offers two destinations for some of Dirt Late Model racing’s biggest names, while others take a final breather before next week’s World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, where the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will wrap up its season.
Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park’s doubleheader features a $50,000-to-win Halloween finale and a contingent led by DirtonDirt Top 25 leader Ricky Thornton Jr. Meanwhile, East Alabama Motor Speedway welcomes drivers to a new surface and revised layout for the National 100.
Both events will be streamed live on FloRacing. Here’s where the nation’s top-ranked Dirt Late Model drivers plan to race this weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
Thornton, Hoffman Lead Portsmouth Contingent
Ricky Thornton Jr. returns to his Koehler Motorsports Late Model after spending last weekend racing sprint cars in his native Arizona. The nation’s top-ranked driver brings a four-race Late Model winning streak into Portsmouth, with his October victories at Eldora Speedway and West Virginia Motor Speedway worth a combined $290,000.
Joining Thornton are Nick Hoffman, Tyler Erb, Josh Rice and Drake Troutman, giving Portsmouth five drivers from DirtonDirt’s current Top 25.
Hoffman gets another weekend of competition before pursuing the World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship at the World Finals. Erb heads to Ohio after winning the last three Portsmouth features worth $35,000, while Rice returns from an off weekend.
Troutman makes the trip after finishing third in Whynot Motorsports Park’s Fall Classic.
Gustin, Cody Overton Head To National 100
Ryan Gustin and Cody Overton are among those headed to East Alabama Motor Speedway for a National 100 weekend featuring Friday’s $10,000-to-win opener and Saturday’s $25,000-to-win finale.
Both arrive with momentum from Modoc Speedway. Overton earned his first World of Outlaws victory in the opener, while Gustin finished second in the finale.
Former World of Outlaws champ Dennis Erb Jr. and former Lucas Oil Late Model campaigner Spencer Hughes are on the National 100 entry list.
They’ll encounter a different challenge at the 3/8-mile Phenix City oval, where recent work brought in more than 180 truckloads of clay and revised the track’s layout. Promoters hope the changes improve side-by-side racing and create more opportunities to use multiple grooves.
Chris Madden, Brandon Overton and Jimmy Owens are also possible National 100 entrants, though their appearances remain unconfirmed.
Several Stars Idle Until World Finals
Brandon Sheppard, Jonathan Davenport and Bobby Pierce headline the drivers sitting out this weekend ahead of the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Sheppard heads toward Charlotte as the newly crowned Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion. Davenport takes a break after collecting $55,000 in back-to-back victories at Modoc and Cherokee as Pierce prepares to close out a would-be third career WoO title.
Hudson O’Neal, Devin Moran, Tim McCreadie, Dale McDowell, Brian Shirley, Kyle Bronson and Dan Ebert also have the World Finals listed as their next action.
