Rico Abreu captured his third consecutive Skagit Nationals crown Saturday at Skagit Speedway, prevailing in a back-and-forth battle with Tanner Thorson to collect the $126,000 payday.
Thorson led 19 of the 40 laps, but Abreu took command for good on lap 26 and survived a late charge from Aaron Reutzel for his sixth High Limit Racing victory in nine appearances at the Alger, Wash., oval.
Reutzel advanced from sixth to finish second, extending Abreu’s championship advantage to 46 points, while Thorson settled for third and a career-best $26,000 payday.
Justin Sanders and Giovanni Scelzi completed the top five. The race was stopped for approximately 30 minutes after contact between Reutzel and Trey Starks sent Starks flipping into the turn-three fence on lap 31. Starks climbed from his car unharmed.
