Anthony Macri is on the mend again after suffering a broken clavicle and bruised lung in a crash during Sunday’s 14th annual Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway.

The 27-year-old Dillsburg, Pa., driver was transported to a local hospital following the accident and underwent further evaluation before his team announced the extent of his injuries Monday morning.

Macri’s crash occurred on the initial start of the fourth heat race when he and Brady Bacon collided entering turn one, triggering a car-crunching flip into the outside wall. 

“After evaluation, he was diagnosed with a broken clavicle and a bruised lung,” Macri’s team said in a statement. “He is in some pain today, but is doing well and remains in good spirits.”

The latest injuries come less than seven weeks after Macri returned from a nearly three-month absence because of compression fractures to his T4 and T5 vertebrae from an April 3 crash while leading a feature at Williams Grove Speedway. He remained sidelined until returning to capture June 26's PA Speedweek opener at Williams Grove in his first race back.

He most notably capturing his second Kings Royal victory last month at Eldora Speedway, one of five wins that have transpired since returning from his back injury as part of an eight-win campaign.

Macri’s latest setback continues an injury-hampered stretch dating to last September. He also suffered a T4 compression fracture in a crash during 4 Crown Nationals weekend at Eldora Speedway that sidelined him for three weeks, meaning Sunday’s accident marks his third significant injury-related absence in less than a year — this one leading into the 65th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's, which begins Wednesday at Knoxville. 

His team did not provide a timetable for his return. Further updates will be provided in due time as Macri begins his recovery.

“He’s understandably disappointed to be sidelined from the car again, but he’s staying positive and focused on the road ahead,” the team said.

Macri’s team also credited his safety equipment and XXX Chassis for protecting him during Sunday’s crash.

“We also can’t thank our safety equipment manufacturers enough, along with XXX Chassis, for building a race car that did its job when it mattered most,” the team said. “Last night was a hard reminder of just how important quality safety equipment and a properly built race car are.”
