Jason Martin of Liberal, Kan., suffered fractures to his T6-T7 vertebrae following a crash during Tuesday’s Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing B-main at Eagle Raceway.

The 43-year-old was running eighth in the 12-lap consolation race — four spots shy of transferring to the feature — when disaster struck on lap three. The incident occurred in turns one and two of the third-mile oval, where Martin hopped the cushion, triggering a single-car accident. He then backed hard into the wall and turned end-over-end once before landing back on all four wheels.

The crash brought out a red flag that lasted approximately 10 minutes as safety crews worked to carefully extract Martin from the car. Officials ultimately had to cut him free before he was placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to Bryan Health.

In a social media update posted in the early hours of Wednesday, Martin confirmed the extent of his injuries.

“CT scans showed fractured T6-T7 vertebrae. I’m going home in a brace,” Martin said. “I’ll see a specialist for further MRI tests when we can get an appointment, hopefully in the next day or two.”

Martin also expressed gratitude for the response from track and medical personnel following the crash.

“Thank you to the safety crew at Eagle Raceway and the High Limit/MedStar safety team for getting me safely out of the car, Eagle Fire and Rescue medics for taking such great care of me during transportation to the hospital, and the nurses and doctors at Bryan Health — they were amazing,” he wrote. “Lori and Charlie (Cutter) with Racers For Christ came to check on us at the hospital. Thank you.”

He also acknowledged the outpouring of support from the racing community.

“To everyone that has reached out and said kind words of encouragement, thoughts and prayers — thank you,” he said. “It means so much to my family and me. We’ll see what the next few days and weeks look like and go from there. We’ll try to keep you updated the best we can.”
