Last week, I decided to rank the best Sprint Car drivers in the country on my personal X account, and it generated plenty of discussion.
So for the first time on FloRacing, I’m rolling out weekly power rankings of the top 25 Sprint Car drivers in the country, an initiative stemming from my five years as a DirtonDirt Top 25 poll voter amid growing debate over which tour — Interstate Batteries Kubota High Limit Racing or the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series — or even which region, has the best drivers.
Like any rankings, these are subjective and fully debatable. There are cases to shuffle just about every driver up or down — or in and out altogether.
My approach weighs a driver’s last 10 races heavily, rewarding present form while still respecting a driver’s full body of work and reputation. Recency, wins, consistency and context all matter.
You’ll notice I account for circumstances — mechanical failures, flat tires, etc. — that can skew results. For example, Carson Macedo ran fourth before a spin led to his 16th-place finish at Lawton on Saturday while Brad Sweet had a mechanical failure while leading last Thursday at Central Arizona. Furthermore, Buddy Kofoid’s average finish is 3.0 outside a pair of mechanical issues (March 2 at Volusia and March 20 at Lawton) and wreck out of the lead in March 13's final laps at Kennedale.
Those blemishes do keep Kofoid out of the top-five, but with proper context, he still slots ahead of drivers like Rico Abreu, Sheldon Haudenschild, Donny Schatz — all whom have better outright average finishes without Kofoid's level of misfortune.
There’s also a balance of production and participation. Corey Day, for instance, is top-five material in pound-for-pound metrics, but a three-race sample size keeps him behind nine full-timers who’ve consistently delivered so far this season. Same applies for Kyle Larson.
You’ll see recency bias at play, too, but not favoritism, as the World of Outlaws have nine drivers ranked while High Limit has eight. Although Sheldon Haudenschild sits six points behind Macedo in the World of Outlaws standings, Donny Schatz and Rico Abreu have the edge this week thanks to more recent trips to victory lane, plus Schatz's third-place run Saturday at Creek County makes him hard to displace.
As for comers and goers: Freddie Rahmer drops out after 10th- and 24th-place finishes in Central PA openers at Port Royal and Williams Grove, while Ashton Torgerson exits following his fourth finish of 20th or worse in nine races to start the year.
Justin Peck was on the verge of re-entering, but Logan Seavey’s impressive four-race High Limit jaunt earned him a final spot. Brad Sweet and Ryan Timms join Seavey as Top 25 newcomers.
