The Ray Cook-promoted Southern All Stars and Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals weekend doubleheader wraps up Saturday at Cherokee Speedway with the co-sanctioned 60-lap, $20,053-to-win 24th annual Ginger Owens Memorial March Madness.

The event honors longtime scorer Ginger Owens, a respected figure who worked with multiple touring series and helped train up-and-coming track scorers. Owens passed away Feb. 20, 2019, following a battle with cancer, and her name was added to Cherokee’s March Madness event later that year.

Friday’s action saw Brandon Overton lead all 54 laps to win the $10,004 Ed Basey Memorial at Modoc (S.C.) Speedway, holding off his younger brother Cody. The race marked the first major Super Late Model event at Modoc since October 2021.

Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., captured last year’s unsanctioned March Madness, while Jeremy Steele of York, S.C., is slated to debut Billy Hicks’s No. 79 Longhorn on Saturday. Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., also returns in Cody Sommer’s No. 13 DRT house car.
