Rico Abreu clinched the Kubota High Limit Racing Series sprint car championship on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, capping a season-long battle with Brad Sweet for one of the sport’s richest titles.

Abreu secured the crown on points in the series finale after entering the weekend with a slim lead.

Abreu won the High Limit Racing championship by nearly 50 points. He came into the two-night All-In Championship event at Texas with just a 28-point edge over defending champion Sweet. Abreu then scored a crucial victory in Friday’s preliminary feature, stretching his advantage to 40 points heading into Saturday

That meant he only needed to finish 10th or better in the finale to clinch the title.

He did better than that. He won the final race to lock in the title

Abreu, 33, of St. Helena, California, will collect a $250,000 champion’s bonus for the title. He won 13 races during the 51-race High Limit season. Sweet settled for second place in the final standings as Abreu earned his first High Limit series championship.
