Building hype toward the Gateway Dirt Nationals, the popular indoor event inside St. Louis, Mo.'s The Dome at America's Center this Dec. 4-6, the 1/8-mile Coles County Speedway in Mattoon, Ill., hosted the first-ever Road To The Dome on Sunday.
Prevailing over fellow Illinois driver Brandon Sheppard, former Gateway Dirt Nationals prelim winner Mike Spatola pocketed $10,000 at the Micro Sprint track in the 40-lap feature he led from start to finish. Sheppard pressured Spatola the entire way and briefly took the lead on lap 31 before the pass was negated by a caution for debris.
Besides the lap-31 caution, four incidents slowed the 21-minute feature: Lap 8 for Trevor Gundaker's first turn-three spin (he spun again on Lap 33 before retiring); Lap 27 when Daniel Adam slowed from ninth; and on a Lap-33 restart when Bob Gardner and Jason Wagner spun battling for eighth.
