South Boston Gears Up For Epic Championship Finale With Tie Atop Standings
Peyton Sellers and Trevor Ward are tied atop the points standings entering Saturday's season finale at South Boston Speedway.

Just 100 laps remain in the 2025 Late Model Stock Car season at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway. Two drivers enter Saturday’s season finale in a total deadlock atop the standings with a third driver sitting and lurking in close proximity.
Peyton Sellers and Trevor Ward have had nearly identical seasons, and that’s resulted in a dead tie with 475 points each. Meanwhile, Landon Pembelton sits just eight points behind Sellers and Ward, ready to take his first South Boston Speedway track championship.
So how did we get here? Let’s break down all three drivers’ seasons, starting with the two points leaders.
For starters, each driver has won six times this season. Each driver has double-digit top five finishes and double-digit top 10 finishes, though Sellers has spent more time out front thanks to his five poles won and 522 laps led.
But this has been a battle since the very first day of the season back in March. Sellers led 50 laps and won the first race, while just a few hours later Ward led 15 laps and won the second race of the season. The big difference that day? Ward finished third in the first race, but Sellers finished 11th in the second race.
The seven-time track champion didn’t stay down long, though, as Sellers won the pole and led 93 laps on his way to his second win of the season just a couple weeks later. Ward led seven laps that day and finished second to Sellers.
Sellers and Ward traded wins each of the next two weeks. Sellers again won the pole on April 26 and led 24 laps before losing the lead to Ward. Ward led 76 laps and won the race, while Sellers had to settle for second.
Then Sellers finally got hot for a bit as he swept the twin features on May 10. Sellers finished fourth and second that night, and then he finished fifth on May 24 while Sellers finished second.
Ward got back to victory lane for the third time this season in the second race on May 24, leading 68 laps on his way to victory lane. Sellers finished a distant 11th for the second time this year.
But all that ground Ward gained on May 24 was lost in the first of two races on June 7. Ward finished 14th while Sellers won his fourth pole of the year, led 72 laps and won for the fifth time. However, Ward went back to victory lane for the fourth time in the second race that night while Sellers finished fifth.
Each driver had their worst night of the season in the biggest race of the season, the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 on June 28. Unfortunately for both, their night was over before it basically began as both were caught up in a multi-car crash on the very first lap of the night. Sellers finished 24th while Ward limped to a 19th-place finish.
Sellers didn’t stay down for long as he was back in victory lane in the very next race on July 26. He finished first and second in that night’s twin 75-lap features while Ward finished third and fifth.
But in the last four races it’s been Ward visiting victory lane twice, while Sellers hasn’t won since that night in late July. Ward won the first of two races on August 9, and the first of two races on August 23 to bring him back into contention and into a tie atop the championship standings with Sellers as Ward looks for his first championship at South Boston Speedway.
In total, Sellers enters Saturday night’s finale with six wins, five poles, 13 top five finishes and 13 top 10 finishes with 522 laps led. Ward enters the finale with six wins, zero poles, 14 top five finishes, 15 top 10 finishes, and 206 laps led.
Oh yeah, then there’s Landon Pembelton. The Amelia, Virginia driver will need some help to win the championship, but it’s certainly possible. Pembelton has two wins, 12 top five finishes, 15 top 10 finishes, and has led 195 laps this season. Pembelton is also the most recent winner, leading 52 laps on his way to victory lane on August 23. Pembelton’s other win came in the first race on May 24.
The Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car championship battle will conclude with a 100-lap showdown on Saturday night, which will cap off a big night of racing that includes 50 laps for the Limited Sportsman, 20 laps for the Hornets, and 25 laps for the Pure Stocks.
