Throwback paint schemes continue to be announced as we get closer and closer to this weekend’s CARS Tour Throwback Classic presented by FloRacing. Championship contender Landen Lewis and his Kevin Harvick Inc. team unveiled their special throwback to Lewis’ mentor on social media Wednesday evening.

Lewis, who sits just six points back of the championship lead in the Late Model Stock Car division, will pay tribute to Ron Hornaday Jr. on Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway as he chases a monster $50,000 payday.

Lewis’ normal No. 29 car will be renumbered to 97. His normal white and blue race car will be draped in yellow and orange.

While some race fans on the east coast might not recognize this car, west coast Late Model fans instantly will as this is the scheme that Hornaday piloted to two consecutive championships in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour in 1992 and 1993. He also scored half of his 18 victories in these colors during that timeframe. Hornaday was named as the Tour’s Most Popular Driver in 1992 as well.

“When we decided to run a Throwback car for the Hickory race, immediately without hesitation my whole team said let’s run the iconic No. 97 Southwest Tour car,” said Lewis in the video announcement for the car on social media. “Getting to honor Ron Hornaday, NASCAR Hall of Famer, and someone that is my idol, is truly something that is very special to me. He and his family have done so much for me, on and off the race track.

Lewis and his KHI team surprised Hornaday with the car at a test session at Hickory on Monday morning. Lewis told FloRacing that Hornaday was ecstatic and extremely honored, which is made clear in the video announcement.

“Look at that. That’s badass, dude,” Hornaday can be heard saying.

In addition to Hornaday’s Southwest Tour prowess, Hornaday went on to score 51 victories in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, which has him second on the all-time wins list. He also scored four championships in that division, which is the most all-time. Two of those championships came while driving for Kevin Harvick Inc. in 2007 and 2009.

Hornaday was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2018 and was named as one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023.

Lewis currently sits second in the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car division points standings entering this weekend’s Throwback Classic at Hickory Motor Speedway.
