It’s been the summer of Shane Van Gisbergen this year with “SVG” claiming three NASCAR Cup Series victories since June, but on Tuesday night the driver from New Zealand added another line to his illustrious resume. Van Gisbergen can finally say he’s a winner on an oval track on pavement.

The 36-year-old Kiwi scored the victory in a Legends car in the season finale for the Summer Shootout on Tuesday night on the quarter-mile track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Van Gisbergen took the lead away from eventual Pro Legends division champion Jake Bollman just past halfway, then had to hold off one last charge from Bollman in the last couple of laps.

Although Van Gisbergen didn’t have a rugby ball to punt into the grandstands, as has become his signature celebration following a Cup Series victory, Van Gisbergen did plenty of donuts in the infield grass to celebrate his monumental victory.

“It’s pretty cool,” Van Gisbergen told FloRacing after his win. “I had an awesome time here. Every week we seemed to get better. It was a load of fun. I didn’t want to wreck the car on the tarmac so I did the donut in the grass, but I had to celebrate. It was fun. These guys at Joe Ryan Race Cars worked pretty hard and they worked so hard for us. It was cool to reward the guys and finish on a high.”

Van Gisbergen initially took the NASCAR world by storm in 2023 when he won the inaugural Chicago Street Race in his debut start in the Cup Series. This year, Van Gisbergen is locked into the playoffs after scoring wins at Chicago and Sonoma Raceway back-to-back in July, and NASCAR’s inaugural race for the Cup Series in Mexico City back in June. 

Van Gisbergen competed in every round of the 2025 Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Pro Legends division.
