Kyle Larson's preparations for another Indianapolis 500 took a hard turn into the outside turn-three wall on Fast Friday as the former NASCAR Cup champion wrecked during a mock qualifying run in the last full practice before Saturday's qualifications.

On a day where track temps exceeded 130 degrees, making drivers and teams leery to log laps around what turned out as treacherous conditions at the 2.5-mile oval, the 32-year-old overstepped his boundaries exiting turn three. His No. 17 McLaren-Hendrick entry snapped around and hit the outside wall nose-first.

Fortunately for Larson, he emerged OK. And in more good news, he won't have to revert to a backup car. Actually, Arrow McLaren made repairs in less than an hour to get Larson back on track with exactly 30 minutes left of on-track time Friday.

Larson's incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. and he made his way back onto the IMS oval for an installation lap at 5:30.

"Yeah, I'm OK. Just had a lot of front grip there in three," Larson said. "Just kind of bit and felt it come around. And it comes around quick once it does that. Bummer. I don't know, it is what it is. At least we found both ends of the spectrum. At the open test, I hit it at the right-front and today I backed it in.

"I'm not too worried about it. I think we'll be fine. Adjust on it a little bit, track conditions will be better tomorrow. We'll still be fast."

Larson wasn't the only driver to wreck Friday at IMS. Chip Ganassi Racing driver Kyffin Simpson also lost control of his race machine, wrecking a few hours earlier. Simpson, unlike Larson though, needs to go to a backup car. Larson only managed three full laps before his wreck and didn't take the track until around 4 p.m. to avoid the blistering track conditions from earlier in the day.

But as it turned it out, the track was too tricky for Larson to complete a full mock qualifying run.

"I guess, obviously, it's tricky. I spun. I don't know, yeah, just kind of caught off guard a little bit there," Larson said. "Again, like I said, I think we'll be fine. I tend to get over things pretty quickly. I know I spun, but my balance felt close to being pretty good. Just work on it a little bit. Like I said, we'll be good tomorrow. Track will be cooler. We'll be fine.

"At this point, I'm sure we'll probably want to get out there and shake it down, I'd imagine. I don't really know. That would be good. If not, you still get time to make a few runs tomorrow. Like I said, track conditions will be better, and I'm sure we'll probably pack a little more extra downforce just to get a run in. Again, not too worried about it."
