2025 Indianapolis 500 Opening Practice Results
Results from Tuesday's 109th Indianapolis 500 opening practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Though Mother Nature curtailed Tuesday's opening practice the first two hours of the afternoon, Indianapolis 500 hopefuls still logged three hours of on-track time around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5-mile oval, with Team Penske's Will Power posting the overall fastest lap of 227.026 mph.
Kyle Kirkwood paced all drivers in non-tow (or non-drafting) results at 219.497 mph. Kyle Larson registered the 24th-fastest overall lap at 221.027 mph and the 13th-fastest non-tow lap of 217.752 mph.
“I think we’ve got a pretty good baseline,” Power said. “My teammates are pretty good. I learned a thing or two off them. (The Indianapolis 500) almost its own championship in itself. You’ve got to look for your weaknesses and improve.”
Reigning two-time Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden, four-time IndyCar winner this year Alex Palou, six-time IndyCar champ Scott Dixon and reigning Indy 500 polesitter Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top-five in overall speed.

Newgarden aims to make history with a third straight Indy 500 triumph. Helio Castroneves led non-Penske/Ganassi drivers at 224.523 mph for Meyer Shank Racing.
Wednesday features a refresher test for Tony Kanaan, backup for Larson, who’s making his second attempt at The Double on May 25 — both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. Practice on Wednesday runs noon-6 p.m.
