Ever since Joe Gibbs told his Joe Gibbs Racing drivers that they were allowed to run extracurricular races outside of NASCAR again, his drivers have been exercising that right to its fullest extent. Christopher Bell went back to the Chili Bowl, winged Sprint Car racing, and even ran a pavement Super Late Model race, while Ty Gibbs also went to the Chili Bowl.

But now it appears that the young Gibbs is trying something new as video surfaced on social media of him testing a winged Sprint Car at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, North Carolina.

The video was shared by Sprint Car driver Lynton Jeffrey on X on Wednesday afternoon. Jeffrey said that, “Ty was very impressive. He really took the car like a professional and was very smooth. He wasn’t lacking speed and gave great feedback as we made the car better with each run.”

Gibbs, the grandson of team owner Joe Gibbs, is no stranger to dirt racing, especially open-wheel dirt racing, though he just isn’t as known for it as his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates of Bell and Chase Briscoe. Gibbs’ racing journey began in Outlaw Karts at Millbridge Speedway in Salisbury, North Carolina before he made the switch to pavement racing.

But since the elder Gibbs told his drivers last year that they were now allowed to run dirt races again, the younger Gibbs has made his return to dirt racing. Gibbs made his debut in a Midget at Ventura Raceway last fall in the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix. He followed that up with his debut at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals earlier this year.

Is it possible that a winged Sprint Car debut is also on the horizon for the 22-year-old driver? We’ll just have to wait and see.
