The Indianapolis 500 has been around since 1911, and there are a lot of familiar names on the list of winners. See who won the first 108 editions.

The Indianapolis 500 boasts more than a century of history and tradition. The annual race draws more than 300,000 spectators to the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, while millions more follow the action from home.

Below, is a list of everyone who has won the prestigious race, some more than once.
Four drivers have won the Indianapolis 500 a record four times – AJ Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977), Al Unser Sr. (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987), Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991), Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021) and Josef Newgarden (2023, 2024).
Ray Harroun won the inaugural race in 1911. Alexander Rossi, a 24-year-old rookie, won the milestone 100th edition of the Indy 500 in 2016. Josef Newgarden is the defending champion.
Here are some other Indianapolis 500 fast facts:
- In the mid-1930s, the tradition of race winners celebrating with a bottle of milk (drinking and pouring over their heads) was born.
- Some races were decided by less than one second. The smallest margin of victory was 0.043 seconds in 1992. The largest was more than 13 minutes in 1913.
- The driver/car in the pole position has won 21 times.
- In 1912, Ralph DePalma led for 198 of the 200 laps and did not win. He had engine trouble and finished 11th.
- Three times (including 2023), the race winner emerged on the final lap.
- Janet Guthrie (1978) was the first woman to finish in the top 10 (ninth). Danica Patrick did it six times, with a best finish of third (2009).
