AUSTIN -- The culmination of a wild and crazy track and field season is upon us at the UIL Texas State Outdoor Championships here at Mike Myers Stadium. 

Beginning Thursday and running through Saturday, the very best sprinters, distance runners, throwers and jumpers will conclude their seasons with season-ending performances across Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A, Class 4A, Class 5A and Class 6A divisions.  

Every year, a selection of the season's best performances come from Texas State, and this year is no different. We could be in store for state bests, meet records and maybe even a national record or two.

Among the notable national-class athletes set to perform this week include three-time national record-holder Elizabeth Leachman (outdoor 5K, indoor 5K, 3,200m), national 4x100 record-holders Atascocita and senior standout Jelani Watkins, freshman sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus, elite hurdlers Mason Dossett, Lillian Harden and Jayden Keys and standout distance stars such as Caden Leonard, Noah Strohman, Nicole Humphries and San Juanita Leal.

A Wind-Legal Masterclass From Tyler Brown

It took a Texas No. 1 performance to win a Class 4A title. 

That's exactly what Tyler Brown accomplished on Thursday, clocking a wind-legal 20.72 (+0.9) to take down defending champion Austen Diggs, who followed up his 4A title in 2023 with a career best 20.77. 

It wasn't enough. 

While Brown, a senior at Aubrey High School, entered with a top wind-legal time of 21.11, he solidified his state performance with a run for the ages. Only Christian Miller, a Creekside senior who broke 10 seconds in the 100m this season, has run faster for 200m in 2024. 

Brown now ranks No. 2 in the country at the distance.

Nunez Anchors Home Randolph To The State Team Title

It was 20 points and a state team title for Universal City Randolph in the final event of the night on Thursday at the Class 3A Championships.

Randolph's Taylor Nunez, already a winner in the 100m and 200m, took the hand-off on the back-end of the 4x400 and brought home the win in 3:50.19, clocking 57.42 over the last 400 meter frame. 

That gave Randolph six points on Goliad and a total of 78. 

Strohman Holds The Field Off, Claims His Class 3A Triple

It certainly didn't come easy, but by night's end on Thursday Holliday's Noah Strohman, the high school sophomore from Northwest Texas, pocketed wins in the 3,200m, 800m and 1,600m. 

He closed his day off with a winning time of 4:16.68 in the 1,600m, hitting 58.39 on his last quarter to fend off East Bernard's Christopher Kopecky, who was just a few tenths behind in 4:16.91.

Maya Dominates In Class 4A 400m Final

It was an exemplary effort from Lindale's Colter Maya, whose winning time of 46.58 moved up on his all-time best of 46.67 and landed him at No. 29 in Texas history. That performance also ranks No. 4 in the state on the season.

Wharton's Jacorric Allen was second in 47.09, while Snyder's Jay Castillo was third in 48.04.

Flemings Notches Another Win

Cameron Yoe's Yierra Flemings took down the Class 3A 400m title in 54.48, earning her second win of the day after securing the victory in the 100mH. 

Lexington's Kemree Wolridge was second in 55.44 while Shallowater's Makki Hart was third in 56.30.

Henderson Scores A Third Title, Helps Gilmer Pocket State Title

In a Class 4A team title race that ended with a tied score of 66, every point mattered on Thursday, and there was no better athlete for Gilmer than Will Henderson, who anchored the team's 4x100, 4x200 and 100m wins on the day. 

He left no doubt in the 4x200, taking the final hand-off through the zone and into the straightaway, leading Gilmer to a time of 1:24.71 -- which was more than a second better than second-place Palestine in 1:26.13. 

A Returning 100m Champion Decides His Fate

Gilmer's Will Henderson arrived at Mike Myers Stadium as the defending Class 4A champion in the 100m .

He left with his second win in as many year, pocketing a winning and wind-legal time of 10.40 (+1.3) to outpace La Grange's Austen Diggs, who followed in 10.43. Iowa Colony's Jayden Warren was third in 10.59.

A Class 4A Race Decided At The Line

El Campo's Madison Holmes secured the Class 4A final at the line in 11.74 (+1.2) seconds, edging Houston North Forest's Carde Moore, who had an identical time. 

Paris' Baleigh Cashion was third in 11.93.

A New Sophomore Sensation? Winnsboro's Capehart Takes Crown

Camden Capehart grabbed the opportunity by the horns on Thursday, scoring a wind-legal personal best of 10.44 seconds to earn a Class 3A 100m title.

The performance, a U.S. No. 3 sophomore effort, moved him all the way up to No. 27 in the U.S. 

Wichita Falls City View's Jeremiah Durham was second in 10.61 and West's Cory Klish was third in 10.62.

It Was All Nunez, All The Way

It took two recalls and a rescheduled final, but Universal City Randolph's Taylor Nunez didn't let the distractions get in her way in the 100m final, moving away from the field in a hurry in a new Class 3A record of 11.46 (+1.5) seconds.

Gladewater's Peyton Hunter was second in 11.91 while Diana New Diana's Starrmia Dixon was third in 11.93.

Nothing But Swayde In The 110mH Class 4A Final

Nine-hundredths of a second was the margin of victory for Lago Vista's Swayde Griffin, who won the Class 4A 110mH final in 13.75w seconds.

Kingsville King's Jasiah Rivera was second in 13.84, while Stafford's Bradley Lowman was third in 13.90.

Four Under 14 Seconds, And A Close 110mH Final In 3A

Pattonville Prairiland's Hunter Vaughan needed an almost perfect race, and he got just that in the Class 3A 110mH final, clocking a time of 13.83w to take the victory. 

Vaughan nearly equaled his wind-legal PR of 13.84 from March.

Three were under 14 seconds, including second-place Dylan Foster of Brock (13.89) and Cash Goodman of Blue Ridge (13.99). The wind was just a tenth of a meter above the legal threshold of 2.0. 

Lawson Takes Down Lott After The Final Hurdle

It wasn't necessarily an upset, but Fort Worth Dunbar's Kalani Lawson had her work cut out for her in the Class 4A final against Frisco Panther Creek's Falyn Lott and walked away with the wind-legal win in 13.89 (+0.9) seconds. 

Lawson had entered with the division's third-best time (14.03), while Lott had the second (14.01). Lott was second on Thursday in a nearly-identical mark to her PR in 14.03. Sunnyvale's Chiora Enyinna-Okeigbo was third in 14.04.

Fleming Scores The Three-Peat In The 100m Hurdles

Cameron Yoe's Yierra Fleming secured her third straight 100mH state title with a wind-legal time of 13.98 (+1.8) seconds, notching the 14th-best performance in Texas over the 2024 season.

The time was a benchmark for Fleming, who had yet to dip under 14 seconds on the season and had never scored a wind-legal effort under 14 -- though she scored two wind-assisted marks under that threshold in 2023.

Gunter's Abby Elmore, a NCAA Division I recruit in the heptathlon signed with Florida, was second in 14.03 while New Waverly's Brooke Munoz was third in 14.56. Fleming will feature in the 400m final just an hour later at 6:45 p.m.

A Wild Turn Of Events In The Class 4A Boys Final

This race had everything: A newly-crowned champion, a late-race fall and three finishing times within a second of one another.

Defending champion Victor Aviles entered with the division's top time (1:52.66), but he pulled up early in the second lap and left things to a group of five, which only broke up over the final meters, with Canyon's Alexander Niemiec scoring the win in 1:53.08. 

Mabank's Korban Murphy was second in 1:53.50, while Iowa Colony's Ian Hill was third in 1:53.76. A fourth, Silsbee's London Jessie, did not finish but fell at the line after some contact just meters from the finish. 

Aviles finished after pulling up early into the second lap in 2:11.31.

A Locked In Addyson Bristow Finishes The Season With An 800m Title

You know you're locked in when you nearly repeat a personal best performance. 

That was the case for Canyon's Addyson Bristow, the top-ranked 800m runner in Class 4A, who won the state final in 2:10.31 on the legs of a 63-second opening lap. 

She finished things off by separating from Krum's Maggie Neal, who followed in 2:11.88 and Mabank's Trista Etheridge, who was third in 2:13.30. 

Bristow nearly replicated her Class 4A-leading 2:10.31. Her performance on Thursday was her third under 2:12 on the season.

Strohman Nabs Another State Title, Currently 2-For-2 On His Way To Three

Noah Strohman's hopes for a state triple remained after the 800m, with the Holliday sophomore holding off a strong charge rom Ponder's Hayden Long over the final 50 meters to win the Class 3A final in 1:53.54.

It was another personal best for Strohman, who began his day with a state title in the 3,200m. The fast-rising Texas star opened up conservatively with a 57-second lap before turning the dial and finishing in 56.26 seconds. 

Long was second in 1:53.79, while McGregor's Benjamin Castro was third in 1:54.18.

Bendet Holds The Line, Wins 800m Title

Behind a aggressive first lap and a one-second differential across 800 meters, University City Randolph's Sophia Bendet held strong on Thursday, scoring the 10th-fastest time in Texas to win the Class 3A final in 2:09.99. 

That performance lowered Bendet's career-best time of 2:10.13 from April, while it gave her the No. 3 time in Class 3A history, only behind Carmen Mancera (2:09) and Simone Brickley (2:09.81) from 2014 and 2009, respectively. 

Holliday's Kenli Atwood was second in 2:14.51, while Spearman's Braylen Lusby was third in 2:16.33.

The Gilmer Boys, And A Top 10 State 400m Relay Performance

A slight margin was all Will Henderson needed. 

The Gilmer senior took the final hand-off and then ran away from Iowa Colony from there, punching down on the final meters to give his squad a victory in 40.56 seconds. The performance was a new Texas No. 10 time.

Gilmer, which entered the state final ranked No. 2 in the class with a season best of 41.10, held off second-place Iowa Colony (40.97) and Aubrey (41.10). Aubrey was the class' top seed with its 40.99 but fell to third. 

At The Line! Yoakum's Boys Earn The 400m Relay State Title

Final hand-offs are everything in state finals, and for the Yoakum boys, which entered the Class 3A 4x100 final with the fourth-fastest performance in the state, they had some work to do. 

But by race's end, Yoakum took the tape in a winning time of 41.81 seconds, using a final anchor run by Zach Taylor to seal it.

Yoakum put itself in a quality position on the final hand-off, outrunning Hallettsville by six hundredths of a second (41.87) and Troup (41.95) to take the state crown. 

An Epic Walk-Down In The Girls Class 4A 400m Relay Final

Take a bow, Paris!

The Class 4A girls program from Northeast Texas needed an epic final close from anchor Jasmine Franklin -- an SMU recruit with an outright 100m best of 12.24 -- to take down the state's third-ranked (Class 4A) Brookshire Royal girls in a time of 47.32.

Franklin walked down the field over the final 50 meters. Royal was second in 47.42, while Fort Worth Dunbar was third in 47.50.

Clean Hand-Offs And A Fast Performance For The Goliad Girls In 3A 

The top-ranked girls 4x100 team in Class 3A ran away from the field by the second exchange and finished things off with a flurry, securing a winning time of 46.89 seconds. 

That time stood on Thursday as the No. 28 mark in Texas. 

Addison Zamzow, Kyla Hill, Karolyn Youngblood and Hannah Perez were among Goliad's winning unit, dispatching second-place Gladewater, which followed in 47.48 and Bushland, which was third in 48.30.

Two-Times Is A Charm For Class 3A 3,200m Girls Champion

Pilot Point's Addison Hite made it two straight victories in the 3,200m with a final 800m that allowed her to break away from the field on Thursday at Mike Myers Stadium. 

Hite, a University of Houston recruit, put three seconds on the pack in her penultimate lap and then laid down a 78-second final quarter to take home the win in 10:57.28. She was the only athlete under 11 minutes in the field. 

Elysian Fields sophomore Cara Sims was second in 11:00.11 while Poth's Brooklyn Albert was third in 11:01.73.

A Negative Split Second-Half In The Boys Class 3A 3,200m Final

Holliday sophomore Noah Strohman ran conservatively over the first half of the 3,200m final and then put down a major second-half split, clocking 4:27 over the last 1,600m to score the win in 9:22.42. 

Strohman, who is going for the state Class 3A triple on Thursday, clocked a 60-second final lap to fend off East Bernard's Christopher Kopecky, who ran 61 over the last 400m to finish second in 9:23.85. 

Strohman, who earned the third state title of his career with the win, has the 800m and 1,600m remaining. He won the 1,600m and 3,200m as a freshman in 2023.

Troy's Carlos Jose Cortez was third in 9:29.19. 

A Big Move Over The Last 800 Meters For Angel Sanchez In The Class 4A 3,200m Final

Angel Sanchez left the field with 800 meters to go. 

The Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis senior began his move two laps to go, then closed with a hard 66-second lap, securing the Class 4A 3,200m title in 9:14.44 as he put five seconds on the field. 

It was also a breakthrough of sorts for Sanchez, who had yet to win a 3,200m title, though he was the reigning 1,600m champion. Canyon's Ryan Fernandez was second in 9:19.36 while Armando Morales was third in in 9:20.31.

Hannah Stuart Held Off Multiple Moves For Her Second Straight 3,200m Title

Canyon senior Hannah Stuart, the returning double-champion in the 1,600m and 3,200m, held off Comal Canyon Lake's Cadence Patterson -- who ran off the shoulder of the Missouri recruit for much of the way -- before taking the tape in 10:36.58.

Patterson put down one major move with a little over a lap to go, deciding to take a lead on Stuart on the bell lap,  but Stuart responded, closing in 72 seconds as she put nine seconds on her competition over the final lap. 

Patterson finished in second in 10:47.65 while La Feria's Liana Navarro was third in 11:06.26.
