The 38th Chili Bowl Nationals officially began on Monday night, and boy was it a barnburner. Fans in Tulsa were treated to a downright good time with one of the best A-Main races in recent years.

Let’s take a quick look at where those preliminary finishers will land in Saturday’s famed alphabet soup:

TO THE A-MAIN (1-2) – Tanner Carrick, Shane Golobic

TO THE B-MAINS (3-8) – Michael Pickens, Chase Briscoe, Chris Windom, Cannon McIntosh, Trey Marcham, Joe B. Miller

TO THE C-MAINS (9-14) – Nick Hoffman, Gary Taylor, Kyle Bellm, Cole Bodine, Kris Carroll, Howard Moore

TO THE D-MAINS (15-20) – Alex Sewell, Keith Rauch, Jacob Denney, Trevor Cline, Mario Clouser, Emilio Hoover

TO THE E-MAINS (21-24) – Taylor Reimer, Noah Gass, AJ Hopkins, Ricky Lewis

Leading the final 17 laps, Tanner Carrick overtook his Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports teammate, Cannon McIntosh, and then survived a metaphorical four-car brawl for position to score the win. It’s the second preliminary win for the Lincoln, CA native, adding this 2024 Monday victory next to his 2022 Monday win. He is now the 27th driver in Chili Bowl history to score multiple preliminary wins.

While Carrick locked-in for his second career Chili Bowl Championship A-Main, fellow Californian Shane Golobic, of Fremont, CA, won the war for P2 in his Matt Wood Racing, NOS Energy Drink #17W. “Sugar Shane” is now locked-in for his 11th Saturday A-Main, tying him with Golden State racers Jason Leffler, Kyle Larson, and Rico Abreu for the ninth-most starts all-time.

A stout six-car group splitting into Saturday’s B-Mains (2 races, 20 laps, 7 transfer) includes New Zealander Michael Pickens in the Abacus Racing #59, NASCAR star Chase Briscoe with a strong 12th-to-4th bid in the Mahindra Tractor #5, Chris Windom with a 15th-to-5th run in the CB Industries #89, Cannon McIntosh aboard the Keith Kunz Motorsports #71P, noteworthy local Oklahoma competitor Trey Marcham in his family-owned #32T, and Joe B. Miller, who recovered from a near-flip in the Qualifier to a last-lap B-Main transfer then a 20th-to-8th charge.

Also making the cut for opening ceremonies with a Saturday C-Main bid was World of Outlaws Late Model Rookie of the Year, Nick Hoffman, Brian Dunlap’s #32W machine driven by Gary Taylor, Missouri local racer Kyle Bellm, former A-Main starter Cole Bodine with Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports, last year’s alphabet soup hero Kris Carroll, and finally Howard Moore.
