Saturday’s 53rd Annual World 100 Recap

  • Second-starting Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., used a turn-one slider to take the lead from fifth-starting Jonathan Davenport on lap 92 and paced the final nine circuits to win Saturday’s $56,000 53rd annual World 100 at Eldora Speedway. O’Neal led twice for 46 laps (15-51, 92-100) to secure his first career World 100 victory and the first for the Mark Richards-owned Rocket1 house car.
  • Five-time World 100 winner Davenport, of Blairsville, Ga., led 40 laps (52-91) before giving way to O’Neal and settling for the runner-up, 1.121 seconds back.
  • Twenty seventh-starting Dale McDowell marched steadily through the field and took third on the final lap, completing the podium.
  • Ninth-starting Brian Shirley and 25th-starting Tanner English completed Saturday’s top-five finishers
  • Inheriting the pole starting position when Mason Zeigler was deemed to jump the race's initial start and penalized one starting row, Chris Ferguson led the first 14 laps before being overtaken by O'Neal and fading to finish seventh; Zeigler finished one spot better, in sixth.
  • Saturday’s World 100 was slowed by nine cautions, the fifth coming on lap 47 when third-running Bobby Pierce appeared to lose a right-front tire and slammed the turn three wall, ending his night. Thirteen competitors completed all 100 laps, with 14 running at the finish of the 55-minute feature.
  • Sixth-running Devin Moran lost a right-front on lap 40 and made heavy contact with the turn-three wall. After inheriting sixth place, Chris Madden pulled off on the lap-40 caution after dropping a cylinder. Eighth-running Jimmy Owens drew the seventh caution on lap 69 when he appeared lose a rear end. Tenth-running Kyle Strickler drew the final caution on lap 98 when he slowed with heavy right-side damage and pulled off.

  • Fourth-starting Jason Feger took advantage of a lap-six restart and snuck around the outside of early leader Tristan Chamberlain before leading the final 10 laps to win the first heat race by 2.905 seconds over fifth-starting Devin Moran. High-point earner Bobby Pierce started sixth and finished third, securing the final transfer spot. The first caution flew for debris on lap three, while the second yellow was displayed when Tim Lance, Will Roland and Donnie Jeschke tanged in turn one on lap five.; Lance was unable to continue. The third and final caution was displayed when Will Roland slowed on lap six with a flat right-rear tire and called it a night.
  • Fourth-starting Jonathan Davenport took the point from early leader Michael Brown on a lap-four restart and paced the final 12 circuits to win heat two by 1.5 seconds over sixth-starting Chris Madden. … Shannon Babb started fifth and finished third, to grab the final transfer. The first incident necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup when Kenny Collins and Carson Ferguson tangled on lap three, collecting John Tweed and Jon Hodgkiss; Tweed attempted to continue, but slowed to draw the second caution on the ensuing restart before pulling off. The third caution flew on lap six for debris, while the fourth and final stoppage was displayed on lap 12 when eighth-running Josh Dietz missed pit entry and stopped on-track.
  • Kyle Bronson led all 15 laps from the pole to win heat three by 0.526 of a second over sixth-starting Brian Shirley. Mike Marlar started fifth and rounded-out the podium. The first caution flew on lap one when Shane Clanton and David McCoy made contact while battling for third in turn three, causing McCoy to spin; Clanton finished fourth while McCoy was unable to continue. The second and final yellow was displayed on lap nine when sixth-running Benji Hicks made heavy contact with the turn-two wall and limped back to the pits, ending his night.
  • Fourth-starting Chris Ferguson took the lead on lap two and never looked back, leading the final 14 laps to win heat four by 1.697 seconds over eighth-starting Kyle Strickler. Ricky Thornton Jr. slowed from third on lap 12, handing the final transfer spot to seventh-starting Tyler Erb; Thornton Jr. pulled off on lap 13 and will utilize a provisional starting position. The lone caution came out on lap 10 when pole-starting Matt Sheppard spun on the backstretch, nosing into the inside wall; Sheppard led the first lap before his World 100 attempt came to an end.
  • Sixth-starting Hudson O’Neal led the final 11 laps to win heat five by 2.136 seconds over seventh-starting Jimmy Owens. Earl Pearson Jr. started fourth and finished third, securing the final transfer. The first yellow was displayed on lap four when early leader Donald McIntosh lost a right-front tire and slammed the turn-three wall, ending his night. The second yellow came out on the ensuing restart attempt when third-running Mike Benedum spun in turn two, with Mike Bargo also spinning to avoid; Benedum finished ninth and Bargo in 11th. Daulton Wilson slowed to draw the third stoppage on lap five when he lost a left-rear after contact with Wil Herrington; Wilson rebounded to finish eighth after changing the tire. Luke Anstett spun in turn four on lap 10 to bring out the fourth and final yellow.
  • Pole-starting Mason Zeigler led all 15 laps of the sixth and final heat race, winning by 1.061 seconds over fourth-starting Ryan Gustin. Brandon Sheppard started sixth and finished third, securing the final transfer position. The lone caution came out on lap eight when third-running Dennis Erb Jr. slowed with a flat right-rear; Erb recovered to finish seventh after changing the tire.
