Jordan Burroughs’ name is synonymous with American wrestling, and his win in Serbia in September was his sixth world championship (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2022). He also won an Olympic gold medal in 2012.

The 34-year-old claimed his latest title with a victory over Iran’s Mohammad Nokhodilarimi, which also helped Team USA to the men’s freestyle world team championship.

Earlier in May, Burroughs found the top of the podium again at the 2023 Pan-American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He defeated Canada’s Jasmit Phulka in the title match, which earned him his sixth gold medal at the event and third at 79kg.

2023 Final X Matchups

Burroughs’ Final X opponent will be Chance Marsteller, who was the 79kg champion at the 2023 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in April.

This year’s edition of Final X presented by Tezos will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on June 10. The event will feature the top two wrestlers at every weight class in a best-of-three series, with the winners making the 2023 United States World Team.

The world team will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, to compete at the 2023 Senior World Championships from Sept. 16-24.

Check below for the current matchups for Final X and a brief explanation of how each wrestler qualified for the 2023 event.

Here’s what to know about Jordan Burroughs:

Jordan Burroughs Inching Toward Wrestling History

Burroughs is the most decorated American male with his seven combined world and Olympic gold medals, while his 10 medals overall is second behind Bruce Baumgartner, who earned 13 between 1983 and 1996.

Jordan Burroughs Takes The Leap For Nebraska Wrestling

Burroughs collected a 115-20 record at Winslow Township High School, with three district titles, two regional victories and a state championship (2006 at 135 pounds).

He got progressively bigger and better in college, finishing his time with the Huskers with a 128-20 record, which included going 35-0 in 2009 and 36-0 in 2011. He graduated with three Big 12 championships and two NCAA titles (157 and 165 pounds). He also won the Hodge Trophy, given to the sport’s top performer, in his senior year.

Jordan Burroughs Could Retire From Wrestling After 2024

It was reported by NBC Sports after Burroughs’ latest world championship that he intends to retire after the 2024 Olympics, whether he makes the team again or not.

However, since his 79kg weight class is a non-Olympic classification, he’ll need to drop back down to 74kg, if he’s going to make a run at returning to the Olympics. He also competed in 2016, but he did not medal.
