Scelzi Nets Biggest Win In High Limit Opener

Gio Scelzi of Fresno, Calif., banked the richest win of his career in Tuesday's $50,000 Heartland of America Showdown presented by Trackhouse Racing at Lakeside (Kan.) Speedway after Rico Abreu's flat tire thwarted him from the lead with five laps to go.

The 21-year-old Scelzi started ninth and led the final five laps, crossing the finish line 0.419 of a second ahead of 22nd-starting Carson Macedo, a native of Lemoore, Calif. Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis, Ind., finished third and led eight of Tuesday's 31-lap feature.

St. Helena, Calif's Abreu, who led laps 10 through 25, finished 20th.

2023 High Limit Sprint Car Series Point Standings

While Gio Scelzi is the leader atop the High Limit standings through the opening event of the 11-race tour, Tyler Courtney comes away from Lakeside as the top driver committed to the series full-time this year by virtue of his third-place finish.

World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series driver Carson Macedo is second in the standings, but, like Scelzi, isn't planning a full High Limit run. Kyle Larson (fifth) and Brian Brown (ninth) at Lakeside follow Courtney as the series top full-timers.
