Stars Will Shine In Tuesday's Southern Super Series Race At New Smyrna

There’s no shortage of star power entered in Tuesday’s ASA Southern Super Series race at New Smyrna Speedway. From NASCAR stars to some of the biggest names in Super Late Model racing, there’s plenty of fan-favorites running in the Clyde Hart Memorial 100.

The biggest name has to be that of Hendrick Motorsports star, William Byron. The Charlotte, North Carolina native has been moonlighting in Super Late Model racing as much as possible over the last year. Byron won the Clyde Hart Memorial last year, though it wasn’t a Southern Super Series race at the time. He also went on to win the Orange Blossom 100 to close out the 2022 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Byron is ran Monday night's race as a tune-up for Tuesday's Clyde Hart Memorial 100. He went out and dominated, making it three straight wins during World Series of Asphalt competition for Byron dating back to last yeae.

Another fan-favorite NASCAR name that was in action on Monday night and entered in Tuesday’s Clyde Hart Memorial is NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver, Stewart Friesen. The Ontario driver has been racing in Florida for nearly a week already, running Big Block Modifieds on dirt at Lake City, Florida’s All-Tech Raceway last week. Monday will be Friesen’s first race on pavement of the 2023 season as he gears up for the Truck Series campaign that begins on Friday night at Daytona International Speedway.

Speaking of the Trucks, the 2016 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion has also filed an entry for Tuesday’s 100-lap showdown. That driver is none other than fiery Wisconsin native, Johnny Sauter. Sauter is a past ASA National Tour champion, scoring 10 wins in 20 races during the 2001 season. More recently, Sauter finished second to Casey Roderick in the Red Eye right here at New Smyrna Speedway just last month.

The Super Late Models kicked off their 2023 World Series of Asphalt on Sunday night, and it was the youth of the discipline that flexed their muscles. William Sawalich piloted his Donnie Wilson Motorsports Toyota to victory lane in dominating fashion over Roderick and teammate Gio Ruggiero, both of which are entered for Tuesday’s race.

And then there’s the two big names of Bubba Pollard and Stephen Nasse. Neither driver has made an appearance at New Smyrna yet during this Speedweeks, but that will be changing with both drivers on the entry list for the Clyde Hart Memorial 100.

Pollard is a three-time Red Eye winner and a Florida Governor’s Cup winner at New Smyrna Speedway. He also won the Southern Super Series championship in 2014 and has 32 Southern Super Series victories to his name. Pollard’s last win during the World Series of Asphalt came back in 2019, and he has yet to claim the Clyde Hart Memorial trophy.

Nasse is also a Southern Super Series champion, with his titles coming in 2017 and 2020. Nasse has 10 Southern Super Series victories in 80 starts. He also is a past World Series of Asphalt champion, with his Super Late Model title coming in 2018. The Pinellas Park, Florida driver won the Clyde Hart Memorial in 2020 before it became part of the World Series of Asphalt.

In total, 28 drivers and teams are entered in Tuesday’s season-opener for the ASA Southern Super Series. Tuesday’s race is the first time the Southern Super Series will hold an event as part of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
