Live From Tulsa: 2023 Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Tuesday Updates

One preliminary night down, four preliminary nights to go at the 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals. On Tuesday night, 68 drivers will duke it out for two lock-in spots in Saturday's A-Main and a chance to race for a golden driller.

TUESDAY UPDATES

A-Main Recap

Defending Tuesday night preliminary winner Buddy Kofoid led the field to the green flag and led the first two laps before a wild and wacky race began to develop. Following a restart on lap 3, Michael Pickens and Hank Davis made contact that sent Pickens for a flip in turn four. 

Meanwhile, Monday's O'Reilly Auto Parts Race of Champions winner Spencer Bayston had worked his way from his 12th starting spot to third. On lap 7, Buddy Kofoid saw his night come to an end when he attempted to avoid a crash involving Daison Pursley and Damion Gardner in turn two. 

From there, the battle came down to Hank Davis and Spencer Bayston, who charged back to the front after falling back as far as fourth. Bayston attempted to throw a final slider on the final lap but Davis was able to fend him off to score the upset victory.

What To Expect Tuesday Night

Tuesday night is the second of five qualifying nights for the 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals. Drivers will begin the night with heat races, with the top 40 drivers in passing points being placed in four A Qualifier races. From there, the top 16 drivers in combined passing points will lock into Tuesday's A-Main. The rest of the drivers will be placed in C-Mains and B-Mains, with an opportunity to move forward into the A-Main. 

Buddy Kofoid is the defending Tuesday night preliminary night winner after he beat NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson one year ago. Monday night's O'Reilly Auto Parts Race of Champions winner Spencer Bayston will also be among the contenders. Alex Bowman and Josh Bilicki will represent the NASCAR world, while Tim McCreadie will carry the torch for dirt late model racing. Open-wheel stars on the roster include Michael Pickens, Kaylee Bryson, Zach Daum, Jonathan Beason and Daison Pursley.
