Chris Madden Gets First Win As An Outlaw Regular
Chris Madden survived contact with Devin Moran to earn his second career World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory and his first as a regular.
Chris Madden won his second World of Outlaws Late Models Series feature on Saturday night during the 38th annual Gopher 50 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN.
His last World of Outlaws win came in last year's season finale at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Madden's win was notable for a couple of reasons. It is his first as a season regular. He attempted to run the full Outlaws season once before, but the birth of his son in 2007 took him away from the touring series.
It was especially important to the team because one crew member was away dealing with the death of his mother.
"We had a great car and I would like to thank my guys who worked hard this week to get this thing ready for me," Madden said. "This win is for my crew member, Brian. His mom passed away earlier this week, and he had to leave us."
Madden was the third leader in Saturday night's race. The other two were Rodney Sanders and rookie of the Year contender Devin Moran.
Sanders led the first 22 laps before being passed by Moran, who started in fourth. Once Moran had the lead, he fought off attackers for 21 laps through three restarts. His lead evaporated on lap 43 when Madden finally made his way up from a seventh-place starting spot.
While racing for the lead, the pair collided, sending Moran spinning and bringing out the fourth caution of the race. Moran restarted at the back of the field and made his way from 24th up to 17th in the remaining seven laps.
"We ran the top there and got to going good and you know guys want to run the bottom and the top and I was there and I hate it for him," Madden said.
Although he did not lead laps, Jimmy Mars was a major threat during the race, chasing down both Moran and Madden when they held the lead. Mars settled for a second-place finish.
"We were probably a third-place car there," Mars said. "Just kind of a bad deal there between Madden and Moran. We were going to run third, and we got second I guess. We will take second and move on to the next race."
The final spot on the podium went to Mike Marlar, who started in 22nd and passed 19 cars to claim his spot. This was Marlar's fourth podium in his six series races of the season.
Points leader Brandon Sheppard and Chase Junghans rounded out the top five in the 24-car field.
