On lap 200 of the GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, a brake rotor broke on the right front corner of Joey Logano's Ford. That caused him to turn violently to the left, hooking Danica Patrick. As the two crashed, they shred debris.

Aric Almirola appeared to run through the debris and could not slow. He piled into the No. 22. His car burst into flames, but before it came to a halt, he had already dropped his window net and apparently communicated with the rescue workers.

The officials cut the top off the car, placed Almirola on a back board, and transported him to the care center briefly before airlifting him to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he will be kept overnight for observation.

Almirola's weekend got off to a tough start. He was the third Ford driver in the past few weeks to be hit with a heavy penalty by NASCAR and entered the Kansas race without his crew chief.

"I hope Aric is OK; he's definitely feeling the worst of everyone," Patrick said after leaving the care center.
