Morgan Turpen Swept The Weekend At Flomaton Speedway
Morgan Turpen swept the inaugural Hurricane Hustle Friday April 14 and Saturday April 15 at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton AL.
Morgan Turpen swept the Hurricane Hustle I weekend at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL, after leading flag-to-flag in the 30-lap affair on Saturday. It was Turpen's third win of the season and the 15th in her United Sprint Car Series career.
While Turpen led all 30 laps, the victory did not come easily. She set only the fourth-fastest time in time trials and settled into third in her heat behind a blisteringly fast Danny Smith. Turpen was third again in the USCS Hoosier Speed Dash but started on the pole after the inversion. That proved to be the difference as she was able to shoot out to an early lead.
With three wins and a sweep of the top 10 so far in 2017, Turpen is well situated to defend her 2016 championship. She won the season-opening race at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS, before slipping outside the top five in a two-night show Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL.
For the second straight night, she led Danny Smith to the line. The Hurricane Hustle was a story of "almost" for Smith. He was relegated to the runner-up position in both events and came within 0.008 of a second from setting a new track record.
Notably, his near miss for the record came in race trim and not time trials. With three laps remaining in his heat race, Smith circled the track in 10.675 seconds around the quarter-mile clay oval.
Lance Whittington set the record of 10.668 in a Cajun Sprint Car race a few years back.
Second place was in question until the final laps with Smith ultimately prevailing over Jordan Mallett. In doing so, Smith ensured that the top five remained identical both nights.
Mallett finished third in each event. Todd Fayard was fourth, and Terry Gray had a pair of fifths.
Mallett did not go away empty-handed. In addition to his top five, he won the Dash and set the fast time for the night.
A pair of 2016 rookie contenders narrowly missed the top five. Scott Hunter settled into sixth on the heels of a ninth Friday night, with 15-year-old Danny Sams III in seventh on Saturday after finishing sixth in the weekend opener.
