Struggles At Cedar Lake Speedway Give Dominic Scelzi Confidence
Dominic Scelzi is using his struggle at Cedar Lake Speedway as a way to boost his confidence for the month of money.
Dominic Scelzi enters this week's Brad Doty Classic at Attica (OH) Raceway Park and the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, OH with a lot of confidence. That positive outlook may have been precipitated by a couple of misfortunes last week at Cedar Lake Speedway in Spring Valley, MN.
Bad pill draws in both races caused him to roll out late for qualification both nights after the track was beginning to lose speed.
"We drew the No. 58 pill the first night and the track slowed down quite a bit during qualifying," Scelzi said. "We had pretty good speed, but we needed to be a little better. We were able to transfer through our heat race. Then in the main event we gained a little early, but lost some late."
He ran as high as 15th before finishing the night 19th.
Night two was even worse.
"We needed a better pill draw because the track fell off more," he said. "We drew the No. 50 and went out real late. That started us sixth in a heat and I made a mistake. We were battling with Jason Sides and Logan Schuchart. I slipped up on the cushion and Sides got by. Then I was racing all out and ended up letting Schuchart by me and we finished seventh."
That put Sclezi in the Last Chance Qualifier. He failed to advance into the A-Main.
"We had speed all weekend," Scelzi said. "We weren't off the pace. We just got behind the eight ball all night long with our pill draws. The results weren't what we wanted, but I think we gained on some stuff. We tried some setup things to see what we could learn on the car and we got some good notes on it."
Two positive results came from this doubleheader and Scelzi plans to use it as a learning experience entering the "Month of Money." He may have some of his bad luck out of the way. He also got valuable track time racing against the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series stars that he'll have to pass this week.
"We want to make the shows," he said. "We want to make every main event. It's going to be a big feat if we can do that. If we can go in there and qualify strong that will be the first goal. Then I need to run well in the heat races. If we can do that and get ourselves in the main events that'd be a huge accomplishment for me."
