At five years old, most kids are learning the alphabet and how to count. But for two young boys in Kokomo, Indiana, itโs also time to start their motocross careers.
Meet Noah Shue and Owen Steward, who have been competing in motocross since they were two, according to the Kokomo Tribune. All of that practice paid off last month when they both qualified for the AMSOIL AMA Amateur National Arenacross Championship in Las Vegas on May 7.
While the boys have showed an early knack for racing, their high-speed talents understandably create some tense moments for their parents.
โItโs the worst 10 minutes of my life when theyโre out there,โ Casey Shue, Noahโs father, told the Kokomo Tribune. โI want nothing more than for them to come off the track safe.โ
Ever since the boys began racing years ago, Casey Shue and Josh Steward, Owenโs father, have wanted to build track just outside of Kokomo for their sons and other racers to practice. They currently have to drive two hours away to Richmond, Indiana, to practice at an indoor track once a week.
The lack of practice time and experience may put the duo at a slight disadvantage when they get to Las Vegas, which is a concern for their parents.
โItโs possible they could win,โ Casey Shue said. โBut weโre worried about the kids who get to ride every day.โ
Itโs not just time that the parents have to invest in their children at such a young age. A brand new motocross bike goes for about $4,000, according to Josh Steward. But for the two fathers, whose sons have become best friends and watch motocross together all the time, itโs worth it.
Josh Steward said, โItโs a happy feeling when theyโre out there, and when they won the race (last month) we were so pumped.โ
